INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Okay guys, my cochin pullet is being a weirdo. I noticed the other day she was sitting in the nest box for a really long time, then when she came out she went under the coop while everyone else was free ranging. I thought she might be ill, so I kept an eye on her. She was eating and drinking fine, and went out with the others,so I figured she was just getting ready to lay an egg. Anyway I always call her my faker, because when she sits in the box she never lays. I have checked her over to see if she was egg bound and there is no obvious signs of it. Today she has spent most of the day in the box. I reached in to feel for her vent, and she isn't pushing like she is trying to lay. Just hanging out in there. No distress. Is it possible for a 6 month old cochin who as far as I know has yet to lay an egg, to go broody? I hope she isn't egg bound, but I don't see how she could be. She sleeps with everyone at night on the roosts.

Okay so the website is being strange, so I'm quoting myself to post an update..... I went out and put a plastic egg in front of her in the box to see what she would do. She rolled it under herself!! So broody then???? Anyone? I have a ton of fertile silkie eggs over here. lol She is in the large fowl coop though. Should I move her to the silkie coop to brood babies?

Does the blue in the second pic have a cross beak. It might be part of her beard sticking out, i cant tell. I lover her beard and coloring, she is beautiful. She has even got some light lacing on her feathers. Even though I dont know what her legs look like, I would use her in breeding, assuming she dosent have a cross beak. Like I said before i dont really know a lot about the other varities. Your rooster is pretty too. His tail set is a little off, but in pics that really doesnt mean anything. YOur chick are cute too! My favorite is your blue hen, i just cant get over how pretty she is!:drool

Thanks! She does have cross beak, sadly. Though I think I might get more chicks from where I got her, because I too admired that hen and she's has a very nice personality.

Quote: Ahh thanks, I'm sorry about your chicken sickness.

Quote: They are not the sex linked red chickens that many hatcheries have called production reds but since moved to fancy names like red star or golden buff. I think I even saw cherry egger.
But they are production rhode island red chickens. So yes any rooster you got would get meaner and meaner as he aged. The hens while not mean to people do get somewhat mean with young roosters. As for production, I have not really heard of a hatchery bought flock laying for more than 3-4 yrs and production not slowing way down. Hatchery egg laying breeds lay lots of eggs and they lay them fast. They are a touch to a lot smaller than their heritage counterparts. in the end the idea was the smaller faster to lay bird would make the same number of eggs while eating less food for less time. BUT issues can arise, getting egg bound seems to be a big one.

She deifnatley dosent look it gives her an issue as she look pretty hefty in the pic. well then dont use her for breeding, she could pass it on to her offspring. I would get more chicks from whereever you got it. Where did you get her?

Yep! lol I sent her a message on facebook, now I am going to be checking facebook nonstop. Only reason I only get on facebook anymore is to look at farm websites and stuff, I liked littleameraucanamoms page and she has been posting some very tempting chickens, especially eggs, but incubator is full and cannot drive their now.

I know! I always tempt myself about buying eggs, but my goal is not to put any eggs in the incubator till next spring but its so hard because I just can't help myself from looking at the hatching eggs section on here.
