Lovely chicks Brad.

I must say trying to sell a rare breed on CL is more trying than the standard production chickens. I listed my new to me Ameraucana chicks this afternoon at just above hatchery prices but well below hatchery prices counting shipping. Ohh the emails have come in. I have gotten at least 3 different CL users trying to get me to change my price. Only one did I respond to and wow I should have just ignored him. He is why the others got ignored. I even sent him a link to the hatchery page and he was plain rude in his response.

Oh well if I end up keeping all of the fancy pricy chicks I will have lots of blue eggs for my efforts. And if I do sell them then I will have made a profit just large enough to cover our gas to Bloomington and back. So not a gold mine.

That happened to me last night and I had to get up early to let the chickens out. I'm tired and I'm supposed to be getting ready to go to Bloomington, but I had to look at this thread again! Addicted to chickens. Addicted to this thread!

glad we all talk so much, I learn something new every day.
Internet was out from all the rain, and had a scare with my turkeys, my adult Royal Palms were sneezing, nose running and eyes seeping!
so I grabbed them up, and isolated them fast. After reading all the dreaded illnesses, finally realized all the fields were being harvested, corn and beans.
Ragweed and goldenrod are BAD this year. I have had red watery eyes, sneezing, nose running, and finally found out, turkeys can have allergies too!
Once I got them in the hospital/office trailer, changed the filters and set it to fan only, they are already better. What a relief!
I am also very pleased to say my OEGB (march babies) are laying FINALLY. 2 eggs in 2 days. Very excited!
Wanted to say WELCOME to any new members on our thread! I apologize if I missed you.
Off to catch up!!

wow I'm still trying to figure out how to use the links here but I have read a lot of good information and since I don't plan to start my flock until early spring I will just keep continuing reading and learning

oh by the way I need to find in link to go in to learn what certain words mean. although when I was a child and we had chickens on the phone it was never my job nor did I hear a lot of these words I just fed them and gathered eggs

Quote: its really good for most animals, alpaca and goats don't seem as interested. I even do FF for my dog and barncats! Pigs, and most poultry and waterfowl LOVE it.
I have been so busy this week. I have barley had time to get om byc.
X2, been just crazy!
Awesome, I am hoping next year. I will be using the old hog pasture area for the garden. Plan to turn it before winter again in the spring.
Any suggestions to prepare the soil otherwise?
LOL! I was dancing too!!! We had got a few good drenchings but is weeks apart. All the corn is dry here, most of the soybean too. Nice not having to mow tho!
Get a soil test done on the area you are wanting to use. Make sure to test several areas within the area. That will give you a better idea of what that space need or doesn't need. Then let that be your guide.

hogster posted~ Then I took the meat birds outside for some foraging. I just put them in the 4x4 and I took the injured chicken over with me. She did a great job foraging with them and showing them what to do. Then she found my flower bed and all help was done lol. It was wonderful to just sit there for a few and enjoy them. They were a lot more active than was I was expecting. They we trying out those little wings of theirs, lol. It was a great way to end my day.

Mama and chicks in their run

Little meaties enjoying their first foraging.

hogster~ When I take my girls on field trips outside of their fenced-in areas, I always do yard work, but yesterday I was tired so I pulled up a chair and just watched them. Like you, I really enjoyed just relaxing and observing. My Jubilee orp Adeline took a dust bath for almost an hour and purred loudly the entire time! Of course I didn't happen to have my phone or iPad so I couldn't record it.

I only left them long enough to go and get the ipad. Since it was a first I really wanted pics. That reminds me, I do need to pull some grass up so they have somewhere to bath in.

Hmmmmmm. This would be the first time in my life I have been wrong. Please don't tell anyone else. We'll just keep this between us.

The peepers would possibly make a mouth breather out of the chicken. From what I can see of the new plastic peepers, there is just a little nub that holds it in place, not a pin that goes all the way through.

John

I've only ever known my dad to be wrong once. He said Clinton would never be president. Well he was wrong and I never forgot. Seems we won't forget this lol But we won't tel! Our little secret!
FF worked great on mine too, had several finish at 7 pounds dressed, with free range.

Love to see your turkeys!

I'm hoping for some decent weights. Being the first time for me, I'm actually a little anxious of their feeding amounts. I feel like I'm stuffing them lol. So I'm gonna use that chart as a guide, and watch the chicks to gauge feed. I'm going to redo my ratio today and see what I come up with.

I'll get pics of the turkeys today after things dry up a bit, we got rain! It rained most of the night. Well on and off anyway. My poor grand baby, 2 yo, was upset that the night was growling at her. She doesn't like thunder it appears. But thinks the lighting is cool. She could see the rain in the dark and was so excited, then she'd cover her ears and close her eyes when the night growled. Was really cute and funny!
Oh my, it rained HARD here, lost my internet for a full day!
Thank you so much! I had totally forgotten about the soil testing. I haven't had time for a decent food plot for YEARS.
I should be ashamed

, I taught home economics through Cooperative extension for the less fortunate.
The key to healthy meaties is free range, and FF. Make them leave the food dish. set clean water out, and raise them like heritage chicks.
My 2, LilX and Tank, are still lively and healthy, 13 months old, but they are heavy birds.Their build/shape is like a coronation sussex. I try to keep our livestock meant for food very lean.
Both the hen and roo are productive and are in my egg flock. Unsupervised they will eat themselves to death.
If you prefer the birds to be comparable to the big name store bought chicken, that's ok too, its a matter of what you prefer.
But do let them have a regular "chicken life" and withhold feed 12 hours if you choose that route, to prevent "flip" (heart attack)

Aww poor lil ears, your grand baby reminds me of our youngest!! She is now 21 was so afraid of storms and lightning, terrified of fireworks.
She loved the pretty lights tho! I got her pink earplugs and it really helped her enjoy them. Now, she can't wait for the fireworks display

I like the calf manna, also like suggested, liver is good.

WE HAVE RAIN !! My dogs, could do with out the thunder !! First good rain we've had in 2 months !!!! Everything is dryed up here.

Once again I'm to far behind to catch up !!!!

Yes lots of rain! My dogs are fine, grand baby and turkeys don't like the thunder. The want in the coop which is now far away from them and they won't go to theirs! They are soaking wet. Any ideas what I can do, I've been out there trying to guide them in, they won't do it.
Food usually works for all of mine. I have tons of birds following me all over, so even if I get rain here, they just go where I go. I only have to fight with the ducks and geese, they love the rain.
If they wont go to the coop, typically they do by dark, I do a headcount to be sure. and keep watching them.
Kab- I had 3 girls setting, all older, back when it was hot. I put small bowls of water and food next to them in the nest and they did eat it. I agree since she is young maybe high protein would be good. Otherwise just let her do her job, she'll figure it out.

Ok so everybody keep mentioning calf manna. W used to give it to an old horse when I was a kid( she was skin and bones) and it helped her. She was abused when we got her, lived into her 30's!! But that's been years ago. So somebody refresh my memory, what's in it and why is it so good?
If I remember correctly, steroids and antibiotics. I haven't bought a bag in a very long time, at least 20 years. Milk and milk fat, lots of probotics. Need to look it up before i get calves.
Betting the ingredients have changed some by now.
