INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

jchny ~ The Serema breed looks really cute! What do you do with the tiny eggs? Bonbon's bantam eggs are good for scrambled eggs, too (besides hard-boiled snacks). I remember (in the olden days) when you could buy Grade A small, medium, large, and jumbo eggs. I'd guess than Bonbon's are small. They're really not much smaller than my RIR's and SLW's eggs.
I finally changed my avatar. I've had the photo of Adeline sitting on my desktop for a couple of months! Bonbon will be next.
In case anyone wondered . . . Kiniska and I have PMd about her upcoming hatch of orps. I'm trying to be logical and wait until spring. Only two months until daylight savings time begins on March 9th! Yay! I'm also conflicted because my wish list for spring is to get two Cochins, either LF or Bantam, just because everyone raves about them and I like fluffy chickens. I love Kiniska's orps, too, and when she starts posting photos of those little chicks . . . and another temptation is that Kiniska lives right on the way to my sister's in Louisville!

HouseKat ~ Congrats on your EE egg! They are such pretty eggs. My EE lays the largest, prettiest, and most perfect looking eggs of all of my flock. They have large gold yolks, too. She typically lays every other day and takes a month or so off in the fall.

I LOVE your new avatar!!!!!! Cochins are as precious as the orps! Both are well worth the wait

It would take 5 or 6 at least to make a regular egg.
Victoria is a very sweet hen, not even a pound, she will talk your head off if you let her.
She will land on my shoulder the second I go in the coop.
Kate is a crazy flighty girl until you pick her up. then she loves you, just nuts and just as tiny.
Both were supposed to be OEGB. Its ok tho I love them both!
I will get pics asap, they are both just precious. Diana is a true OEGB red pyle hen, Fergie is a GL Sebright.
Harry, my little prince is also a serema but the girls are giving me adorable chicks, very friendly and social.
I am pleased with the eggs Diana and Fergie lay, they are sure large for how tiny they are,

So, I about crapped myself when I saw the size of Exhabition quality LF white rocks! They were like turkey size! Ccccccccchickens- I maybe hitting you up for a couple sometime! I also got to see some roast comb bantams. Very beautiful birds as well! But of course, seeing the moderns was like love at first sight! I ended up getting a pair of Birchen, a pair of blacks, and a trio of blues. He threw in a black breasted red and brown red pullets. I can't believe how solid these birds feel despite their spindley look.

Nice! My husband and I always stop and stare at these guys at shows. Those legs! Something about them is even more dinosaur-like than other chickens.

chisNchickens ~ I recently mentioned that I've never held a Silkie and I don't know much about them . . . When I was looking at my "Extraordinary Chickens" book last night, I saw a photo a "non-bearded" silkie-- you could see her pretty face. I hadn't realized that Silkies have that option-- all I had ever heard discussed were the vaulted skulls.
Yes, That is a nice way to look at it...I have never cared for the NB personally because I love bearded birds. You don't see many either, maybe you should acquire some!

Hello All!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!! Hope today finds everyone healthy and happy if not warm.

I have a problem with one of the girls.

Petrie (of course my mothers favorite!) is acting off. She came out of the coop but then lay down in the straw of the pen and didn't move. I picked her up and checked her vent thinking maybe egg bound but she is clean and moist and even blinked it at me!. She is still nice and toasty under her feathers, her comb and wattles are perky, eyes bright and she still chatters to me about chcken things nothing feels broken but no matter what position I put her in there she stays. Standing or sitting and watching. The other girls ran out and ran with the dogs pecking and whatnot. But little Petrie just stays put. What else should I be looking for in terms of illness or injury? Am I being over protective? If anyone is out there let me know your thoughts please. I'd rather be labeled crazy than the owner of the dead baby girl!

Background:

Four 7 month old Delaware pullets all laying almost everyday for the last two months. Nothing unusual in the last couple of days other than they got to spend a good portion of the last four days out of the pen in the yard because of the weather. Heated water containers 24/7, 3/4 layer crumbles 1/4 broiler crumbles, access to oyster shell and grit 24/7.

Thanks for any help at all!!!

Connie

When the kids were young and had Pioneer Days field trips, I saw the process done to sheep wool. Since Alpacas don't have lanolin, their fiber seems a little easier to deal with.
I really like your new avatar! I've thought of changing mine, but not sure what to use instead yet.

So far fertility on my LF ORP eggs has appeared to be better than 95%. Every egg we crack open has had a very clear bulls eye. If any Indiana BYC peeps would like hatching eggs please feel free to contact me. These are a mix of 100% and 75% English Orp out of a black and blue pen. So splash, black, and blue might all come out of the eggs. Pick up only. I can meet you in Corydon.
I sooo want to add lavendar, blue & splash orpingtons to my flock. I've been drooling ever since I discovered such a thing as a splash existed when I first began researching breeds. My little lavendar orpington Brad hatched for me is still a mystery to me. The consensus from the pics at 12 or 14 weeks was that it was a roo. However, it grew a lot slower than the other 3 chicks. The 2 girls have started laying and the roo is as big as my other orp roo, but much more handsome. The lavendar is about the same size as the girls and isn't exhibiting a lot of mature roo features at this point. I really need to get pics of them posted to compare. If I had a way to get and hatch your eggs I would love some or to get chicks.... I'm also wanting the blue laced red wyandottes....

I actually would be interested if any of you near me have chicks coming from breeds that are good egg layers. I want to get started now growing them out. I know a few months ago I had been talking about being overrun with eggs and I have donated oodles to the food pantry. About 2 months ago some friends started getting eggs from us which resulted in her mom & mom's sister also getting eggs. Then I've had a number of people from church start buying (our youth pastor gave me a chunk of money & said to just keep the eggs coming -- I set up an "egg account" for him!) I had 3 people yesterday morning say they needed to stop by. Now I'm running out of eggs and need more layers now! I've started selling some of the duck eggs, but they're slower for people to catch on to.
