INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Checking in from Hebron! Here are our new babies!

RIR's and Buff Orphingtons. I'm definitely ordering Wyndottes to add to my flock next year.

If the eggs I ordered last Dec don't show up soon, I'll be ordering wyndottes next year too. Which ones are you thinking of. I'm trying to get a few Blue Laced ones. I have 1 BLRW rooster and 1 BLRW hen so far. I also have one BLRW chick that I'm growing out and hoping to get a great quality hen from.

That's what they looked like to me. Wyandottes offer great brown eggs to your basket. One of mine lays lighter brown and the other lays darker brown with speckles on them most of the time. Even though we are preferring our Swedish Flower Hens for personality, I will be sad when we won't have the Wyandotte eggs anymore. I'm tempted to get one or two hybrids just so we can have brown eggs lol but hopefully that won't be for awhile

Did you get your BLRWs from Brad? Since I was MIA, I noticed he doesn't have any more of them now.

What breed(s) are the eggs you are supposed to be getting?

Roosters, just had to jump in on this subject. I have tried several different methods, handling, not handling.. The ones I raised myself are fine, lot of the birds that come in partially or fully grown are sometimes a problem. I do think breed, individual lines, and the birds temperament all play a role in it. I keep a lot of them here, and bottom line, the more roos I have, less problems out of them towards people. I cut my roosters down again recently, pulled 6 total out of my egg coop. Red attacked me twice yesterday! He will be going to rooster jail if it happens again. He better watch it, I have some very handsome SLWs growing up that can take his place!! Same way with Bruce my BA, if there isn't a few other roos, he will challenge me. I notice too, with wearing different clothes, it throws them off. I want them to protect their girls, but repeated attacks won't cut it here.

Great news on the broodies!
I have seen some pretty awful wounds. Worst one was Lila my turken hen, large flap of skin ripped off the back of her neck. That rooster is no longer on this earth, btw!

I brought her in. heavily sprayed with blukote. she healed and you would never know it. This being puncture type wound definitely get antibiotics.
Thank you! The chick is much better now and back in with the others. I am amazed how quickly that healed!

Tonight's questions:
Where do you buy your grit and oyster shell?
How much does it cost per bag, please include the bag size?

We get our oyster shell from Rural King for $11 / 50 pound bag.
We have not needed grit yet but I'm thinking about offering it in the same way we do oyster shell.

I get both at the feed mill in 50 lb bags. Except my calcium from the mill is calcium carbonate in various sizes (fine for mixing into the feed and more coarse for free-feed).

The Calcarb costs about $2.50 / 50 lbs.
Grit is about $7.00
