I like John's idea for using fencing that would need for a run. Hardware cloth is pricey for a temporary fix.
Yes, please no more laws for such things. The mistreated children do need protectors but even then it is hard to say how much more we need. I have heard stories of children being removed when they were not being mistreated. Like everything too much of a good thing can go wrong. Of course there is no convincing my children that too much ice cream is not a good thing.
As for people selling wic food. how do they do it. After all who buys food from a house instead of a store. The buyers should get in as much trouble as the sellers there.

OK. I have to update my rash statements about sale barns.

My experience with sale barns is with cattle/pig sales. I used to go to them with my grandfather 50+ years ago. He was looking for young calves/pigs that he could "feed out" and sell. A few times I saw animals going for cheap and told him. He would say "that's junk".

I don't remember the details all that well, but now I suspect that these were the ill-fed and ill-cared-for animals of which you are referencing. A farmer down on his luck and low on funds, first fed the animals poorly, then had to sell them for what he could get.

I suspect there are broker types that buy a bunch of chickens, ducks, pheasants, etc. Then quickly try to unload them before they deteriorate to the point of unsalability being unsalable.

All that to say, "Yes, I see your point". Just don't say, "There ought to be a law". We have so many laws that no one can know what is and isn't lawful. Treat the cruel with disdain. Save your outrage for those who mistreat children.

John

Are you guys referring to my post? Because I never said there should be a law.

I'm usually the one saying, "There should be a law!" I like laws. Old Salt likes the Wild West. Kidding, John!
Im my opinion there are some laws that need to go, some that need to stay, and some that need to be made. I wont really go into details on that, because by the time I am done I will proabaly be ranting and raving lol just kidding

I am 'over my limit for rating content'....what does that mean? Guess I kind of have the FB mindset here.....if I like what you say or it makes me laugh, I am going to give you a thumbs up. But guess BYC only allows so many. Ha that is funny.

So I know raccons climb things pretty well. I wonder, will they climb a 2x4 fenced in enclosure to reach thru and kill chickens? The predators would have to climb the fencing around the run to get at them, then hang on the fencing to reach thru to the chickens. My chickens are starting to like sleeping outside on some perches in the enclosed run, some right next to the 2x4 wire

.. They are easily near enough where a marauding animal could reach thru and get them at night. I'm thinking I should at least double the fencing in those particular areas, or maybe put up the 1/2'' hardware cloth in those areas.

Any thoughts? Otherwise our coop/run is highly secure unless a tornado strikes.

Also, look out for the giant chicken, he will easily lop off a human head and eat it!

have a small aviary i use to grow young chicks out. it uses the 2x3 welded wire with a layer of vinyl coated chicken wire under it for "added protection". had a coon reach through and jerk the 1 1/2 month old silkies right through the 1" holes of the chicken wire without even breaking a single wire. our chicks slept right next to the wire at night. for a quick fix i added wire to the inside of the posts also. this gave a 4" gap of space between the chicks and the outer wire. this will limit future losses. if another coon decides to come for late night visit.

Old salt- I will ask her, and I have another neighbor who is into stuff too!!

Too fast- mine sleep next to the fence outside too!! I'm going to put a section of hardware cloth at the ends of the perches
