INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Does anyone have any experience with a good Christian based homeschool?

Glad James had such a great experience with 4H!

As far as homeschooling, I would love to talk to you! I was homeschooled in the dark ages, and now am homeschooling my 4 children. I will send you a PM with my contact information. Heading to church now, but feel free to contact me this afternoon.

I accidentally posted this in the parent thread. I prefer this thread as it has more activity than most. :)

Anyways......

Is This Normal??

So we presently have a very harmonious farm.....ALL the birds, dogs, calf, cats, kids......

However, not sure what to think about this one. My sweet kitty, Ruby, has decided that either she IS a chicken or they are her best friends. She is a little over a year old, and just loves hanging out with the chickens, and it is all playful. She rolls over on her back in front of them, lays by the coop, and now has decided to spend lots of time in the coop.
I really do not believe it is malicious at all, BUT.......

Even my rooster just lets her be. Should I stop this, or is this just 'normal'?

My two cats are completely trustworthy with day old chicks to grown. They spend a great deal of time hanging around the chickens and will lay near the babies and let them hop on them. It all depends on the kitty.

Counter to the old saying "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched", you must because after hatching, they won't hold still long enough.

Do what I (think about) doing. Take a photo and count them in the picture.

John
Good advice, but then you have to try and get them all in the same picture lol.

Aww thats so sweet, congrats! Try to get pics, I love to see them with their momma!

M2H Said: jchny~ Is your Lavender still in a nest box? Is she sitting on her own eggs?
She hopped out, but they are finally laying. We are working on expansions this week

More fences.. ugh!
Thanks. I will try to post pics by friday. I dint hatch them under a broody though, I hatched them in the incubator.

"HouseKat~ Did you decide to construct a gazebo coop? It would make a lovely summer home for your chicks."

We are doing it, but didn't get it completed as planned yesterday due to some missing pieces. We have everything now and will try again next Saturday. The sooner the better, because this morning we had a JAILBREAK!! I walked down the hall to the back bedroom and noticed that it was suspiciously quiet, when I opened the door the cover had been pulled off of both tote boxes! All of the Easter Eggers and one of the Black Australorps were out of the brooders. We got them all rounded up and secured the covers better.

where are you located?  I'm looking for a female.  if you are coming to the party I would love to get one from you there.

I'm in Whitley county, between Columbia City and Fort Wayne. I don't know if I can make the party, but maybe if someone in the area is going, then they can play kitten train? I'll see if there are any females and get back to you on it. :)

ETA: As far as I can tell, all four are female.

I have two eggs due to hatch in a week I'm so excited! They are from a golden comet mommy and a buff brahma roo. Anyone know if these will be sex link chicks? Will I be able to tell their gender fairly early? Up to this point I've only purchased chicks. I know nothing of genetics and mixing breeds other than the few things I've read on google. :)

I am pretty sure that you can't make a sexlink with a sexlink, so no, you won't have sexlinked chicks. Do you know if your roo was slow feathering and if the hen was fast feathering? You should be able to sex by feather growth if the parents carry the genetics for it.

RhondaCaroline~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Hope you find good homes for your chickens. Please see info below.

irtehun~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Seems like there are many thread members from your general area. You can click on the link below my signature to view the list. You might read the info below first.

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List? “Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? Quinstar actually adds the info, so you can PM her directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you.

Thank you Quinstar (Erin) for recently adding a long list of information!
If you have questions about the thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who started this Indiana Thread.

Indiana County Map for instant member location
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.
