INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am currently having an issue with three chickens sleeping outside at night and I know their pen is not super secure for attacks, trying to make the tough decision of closing the coop door at night and leaving the three to defend for themselves or leaving it open to they can hide but risking my entire flock while doing so.
Due to the design I have I have to go through the coop to climb through the door to enter the run, doing so causes them all to act like fools and head outside. Making it then a challenge of popping them all back in, going outside to close the door and keeping them all inside while doing this with shear will power.

Thinking as you have all the experience.... You would love to come trench the run out and show me how it's done right..... right...I'll pay you in eggs :D

You can get a couple of small swivel pulleys at the hardware store. String up a rope to the door through the pulleys and run it over to where you have easy access. Pull the rope and tie it off to open the door. Loose it to close the door. A knot in the rope and a notch in a board will relieve you of having to tie it off.

I have a cousin who built a chicken coop for his wheelchair bound son that was entirely operated by ropes and pulleys. The father filled the feeders on the weekend and the son did everything else from his chair. I was highly impressed. As I recall, the building project lasted longer than the son's interest. Oh well.

If you go into each food type directly there is a link to the feed label. Here is the one for grower which I am planning on getting.

So yesterday when I clicked on the Chicken feed link, nothing happened and I never got to this part. Only the links on the main page that explained their reasoning. Today I checked again, and wow, lots of info I couldn't see last night. BTW, if you get the urge for a road trip to Bellingham, I'd be interested, lol

Ha! Luckily I don't have to go that far, but that would be fun wouldn't it! I was really excited to find the retailer in Chicago that was selling it. Thought it strange to find a feed store in Chicago, but whatever. I'm not going to complain about an excuse to go. Plus, it's pretty close to IKEA and I adore that store!

Wow, I just looked at the other retail stores that carry this and Chicago is basically the only store that is not on the west coast! Can't wait to pick some up this weekend. If anyone in the northern IN area wants to try this I'm happy to pick up some extra bags and we can arrange to meet somewhere.

Oh, I forgot to ask, what's up with fermenting chickens food? Is it better for them? How do you know you aren't just making drunk chickens, or is that the point?
I have no idea about the fermenting food. I also have no idea where to find half that stuff anyway. Does it self-replicate? Is that how the feed costs go down?

Happy Thursday.

As for knowing the day, start your morning off by calling 222-2222. They tell you the weather as well as the time and day. It is a great way to teach the children about the days of the week too.

Your coop looks almost done, congrats.

As for the roo, boys can be moody. You might have been a minute too late in giving him attention. If it was not a pet I would recommend spraying him down with the hose before entering the run while carrying a 4 ft section of 1in PVC pipe.

Attention BYCers!

I need some good quality Silver Campine hens, pullets, or hatching eggs ASAP! I have a friend that is traveling from the Kokomo/Peru area to Alabama on Friday and has offered to transport for me. If you or anyone you know has good quality Silver Campines anywhere along the route, PLEASE reply (or PM me) so I can make the arrangements. This would include Kokomo, Indianapolis, and anywhere that is an hour or less from Highway 65, south of there.

Thanks!

Hi guys! Haven't been on in awhile, my wedding is drawing nearer and I have been super busy! Plus I got a new job (to fuel more chickens!!!) and that's been picking up too. A couple of days ago, somehow a couple sneaky chickens got out of the coop, one of my leghorns and game hens, and got into the trees. I didn't notice they were out until AFTER I let the dogs out. I'm not sure if the dogs got em or if they just got chased away. I would wager on the dogs not having caught them, because I didn't hear any chicken screams and the dogs didn't come back bloody. I'm hoping that they found the neighbor's free ranging flock down the road, and just loved it so much they didn't come back. I'm afraid that they got lost and dehydrated in the heat!

Also, my MIL keeps getting these double yolk eggs from her friend. She says her chickens lay them like that. I wonder what the chances are having a flock that mostly lays double yoikers is? I thought that double yolk eggs rarely hatched, so would the odd of hatching a flock of double yolkers be slim?

Maaaaaaybe he thought you had a treat in your hand? Just maybe.
He might just be mad about my offspring chasing him and expressing his displeasure. Maybe he doesn't like the balance of roos vs hens in our coop. He might have some valid issues.

Thank you! I didn't know that hoosiers had that kind of thing (I'm a happy transplant). Where I grew up, you dialed pop-corn and it would do the same. My hand hurts, so that hose idea has some merit if he tries it again.

So I couldnt find any used incubators locally to use for hatching so decided to just get another little giant. Ive had my original lg incubator for quite a while (7+ years) for hatching reptiles. I can get temps and humidity correct with little issues. So doing the exact same i set up my new one (still the old design like my old one). Temps are stable and right where I want them however I can not get humidity over 55%. Using the same size container abd sponge as the original lg who is maintaining humidity at 65%. They are right next to each other so not like in a different room. I dont understand it. So frustrating.
