I've been trying to find out what's been killing my chickens for a month now and I have no idea. A week or so ago I posted on the predator and pest and what killed my chickens. Well they gave me good info but I got different answers like bobcat, coon, fox, etc. I never got a definite answer back so I'm going to ask you guys.
Three chickens were killed and one severely injured but then died in surgery. A young roo and three hens were the victims.
This is how I found them.
The first kill
The young roo had nothing left of him. Some bones were eaten but not much. The head was still connected to the body but no feathers were left on the neck.
Almost a week and a half later a hen was killed.
Most of her was left but by her thigh was a whole with some eaten from the inside.
Injured hen was found that same day.
She had a very deep infected back wound. No maggots were in the wound.
One week later another hen was killed and found in the same conditions as the roo.

I have traps set outside for two almost weeks now but the predator is ignoring them.

Thanks!
are they penned in, or free range?
Is this happening during the day, or at night being found in the morning? Or both?
if they are penned, what type of fence/wire is around the pen, is it open at the top?
Remains being left usually mean a dog, or raccoon. weasels will also leave the remains.
Coyote/fox will take the bird.
It sounds to me you are dealing with 2 different predators also.

most insurance co's consider rotties high risk. My Rommel never hurt a fly, but he sure scared people that would see him.

To share with all..

Today is a sad day, after feeding my RIR's I normally crouch down and talk to everyone so I can see how they look, only two don't mind being handled but that is fine, I can respect their dislike for being man handled so I don't do it. Anyhoo... While crouched down today and chatting, with the girls eyeballing me and chatting back I got a sneak attacked from behind by the rooster.
Never.. I mean never has he even puffed up to me.. took me by surprise. Thankfully I was still holding the jug I use to carry the food and beat him repeatedly until he decided he was done, but that took a minute.
On the positive side I walked away with scratches barely deep enough to draw blood (naturally I am wearing shorts today too), he does now have some impressive spurs so I know it could have been worse.
This now leaves me both mad and upset. Mad he attacked and upset that this is probably his demise.

I guess I am hoping it was a one off and his attack was just testing the man waters with me, if not.. well I shall put in practice what I learned on the 'Great Chicken Adventure'. Although I hate to admit it, I may

while doing so.
Ugh I am so sorry. Dealing with Red and his hormones too. I have pinned him, toed him...even held him upside down by the feet....He still sneak attacks every so often. He and my silkie Butters are both pushing their luck to the limit. Reds sons may have the opportunity to replace him yet!

They are penned in and the top is covered. they are being killed at night and I find them in the morning. One of my relatives owns pigeons and he said he had a similar problem and it was a weasel.

I also have to keep an eye on my roo, Henry, when I'm out with the chickens. About once every week or two he'll decide to come after me. I'll turn and go at him with my wings (arms!) spread out to show him I'm bigger than he is (I'm sure it's rather hilarious to anybody watching me!). I'll also pin him to the ground and hold his head face down on the ground for a long time. Sometimes I'll hang him upside down for a bit and then hold him down on the ground again. Other times just carrying him around while I refill the feeders and take care of the other chicken chores is enough to show him I'm the provider and in charge of the flock & not him. Typically all of these methods will work for about a week or so and then his little pea-brain forgets and we have to do it all over again. If any of my little chicks I got from Brad turn out to be a roo, Henry will be heading to freezer camp!

Thank you! I don't know if its a good sign, but when I went down to give her treated water in the dropper, she kindly went poo for me and it was solid!! I hope that's a move in the right direction. Man, I can't believe I'm actually writing this stuff. Its kind of like taking a baby home from the hospital though. They send you out the door without an instruction manual and hope for the best. I've read all I can get my hands on, but it just doesn't cover everything that you can actually experience.
