I'm a bit disappointed. I saw one of my white leghorns go into the nest box today and I checked it later to see if she laid an egg. No egg but I started wondering if she could lay the light brown eggs that I usually find in the box that she spent so much time in. I researched it and discovered that my white Leghorns are not Leghorns. It looks like they are probably White Rocks. They have red ear lobes. This would explain the brown eggs. So now I realize that I don't have anything that will lay white eggs.

I have just added some silver and gold laced polish so we have white eggs.

oooooh ccccccchickens! i wouldnt be wishing for winter just yet. then we'll all be trying to fight wind chills and snow drifts!

Okay so I got some pics today of our three new girls the rir's and the suspected Minorca and my huge Blueberry. They aren't great quality because they are in our barn. BB"S feathers are a bit ruffled but I love how his color turned out. I haven't had him for 2 months and boy does it make a difference! Also I may be the rooster whisperer, not tooting my own horn, but between my hubby and I, Gus has stopped "dancing" at us completely!!! He gets picked up every evening and cuddled and he hates every second of it, but he takes it like a champ. Sits perfectly still. Crows like a pee'd off baby when we put him down, but he doesn't challenge us anymore. We knock him off hens if he tries to mate in front of us and separate the sparring if it should occur. He tried to get my father in law tonight and we told him what to do to Gus to show him who's boss, and Gus left him alone immediately. Anyone who comes into the chicken area has to hold Gus. It is working like a charm so far!!. Anyway I just had to tell you all that. Here are the new kiddos ;

What beautiful weather we have been having! Here are a few of the girls out looking for goodies.

DH and I got 12 of our pan fry roosters turned into freezer roosters today. I need to get a knife sharpener thing before next week and I really hope my cone gets here too. I think the PO misdirected it.
John ~ you will be glad to know that DH did the plucking while I did the removal of guts. By the end we had a nice assembly line going. Hopefully it won't take as long to fall into a nice pattern next time. It looks like it will be next Saturday before we process any more.

So glad its going well, I know its sure rewarding when you know what to do.

Gasp! Must have read through 35 pages, but I have finally caught up! This is one chatty list! But that is a good thing - lots of excellent info being put forth, joys and sorrows shared, and really funny exchanges. My DH looks puzzled when he asks what I am reading that is making me laugh out loud, and I tell him it's a chicken list.

I have been lurking on this list - no chickens until next spring. Boy, am I jealous of all you chicken farmers! The beautiful pictures of your fowl friends make me green with envy. I thought I had figured out which breeds I wanted for our flock, but your stories and photos make me want to change my list again and again! I am planning my visit to the State Fair around the time of the chicken judging, so maybe some of you will pass by me. (If you do go to the fair and happen to stop by the Lactation Station, my daughter, Maire, is one of the assisting nurses. ;-) She is also dancing at the fair with the Irish Dance troupe.)

We have had our own woes with raccoons. When we barricaded them out of their home in our attic, they dug a hole through the top of our roof. Ran fell for days into an unused bedroom and wasn't discovered until it came through the ceiling into our dining room. What a horrible, expensive mess! We live right in the city, but raccoons and possums are here in large numbers. The raccoons get into huge screaming fights in our backyard. We will have to make sure our coop and run are extra secure. We have a cedar shed that I believe can be converted into a nice chicken home.

I didn't want to go back and find he posts, but I have actually had people from a reptile forum send me poop in the mail to check. I was blue to put my camera up t the eye piece and get pics of the parasite eggs for them. Lets just say, my mailman had to HATE driving around all morning with those packages in he car!

M2H- wishing the best for Violet. I currently have a speckled Sussex hen that is limping. When she walks its almost like she is unsure of her footing and lifts it really high. I've had her confined to a cage in the coop but haven't noticed any progress. I need to do a search, but I had a limping duck last year and read it was safe to give aspirin. It seemed to help her, might try it for the chicken if its safe. Ill have to call the vet tomorrow and see if they have any recommendations.

Beautiful cat! I'm happy with only one cat, but eventually I'd like to get an Abyssinian or Cornish Rex. I never realized how many different cat breeds there are! When I worked at the vets office, we saw a few rag dolls. They always seemed very well tempered and sociable.

Also since M2H seems to be encouraging me to get more breeds

, anyone have any connections for modern game bantams? I'm more interested n the Birchen and red brown colors, but open to any.

I have oeg bantam, but not laying yet. Good luck on the search!

Re: Violet~ Thank you to everyone for your support and kind offers of pullet possibilities. I really appreciate it. I am taking it day by day and hoping Violet will improve. I mentioned last night that after I find a young pullet to be Adeline's new buddy, I will keep Violet with me as much as possible. The reason is that I had found this advice online while researching taking care of an injured chicken. (Excerpt & Photo from article Keep the carrier ("Hospital Kennel") indoors and near you. This allows you to monitor progress and keeps them company. Birds housed alone become quickly depressed. The carrier is easily carried from room to room. I'm sure the experienced chicken owners know about that, but newer ones may not.



As far as finding an approx. three month old lavender orp pullet, I've just begun searching although I know this isn't exactly chick season. vickichicki was so kind as to offer me her special lavender that originated at bradselig's, but I couldn't break up her pair or take vickichicki's baby away. I'll just have to see what I can find and I am also thankful for any leads anyone might have.
I enjoyed looking at all of the healthy looking gorgeous chickens posted by Thunder Chicken, kaphyper, Kiniska -- and irtehun's zigzaggy rooster, Charlie.

Good to hear from toodlesmom again~ It is difficult to decide on breeds when there are so many! You'll just have to be like bradselig and have several of each!

Years ago I adopted a purebred Maine Coon that was a former show cat who was adoptable after he became a "Grand Premier." ha He was the most wonderful cat ever. The Ragdoll is huge and very laid back like a Maine Coon. He is very playful and kitten-like for a three year old. There are a lot of interesting cat breeds, but I also love my stray tiger cat who adopted us a few years ago.
Also since M2H seems to be encouraging me to get more breeds
