INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We actually sell honey from 'Hunter's Honey Farm' (close to Martinsville). There are a lot of people who swear by eating the local honey helps build up your system to the local pollen, ergo, less allergies.
Not only does it help with that it has a bunch of other natural uses.
"REAL" honey is getting hard to find, as specially as much as I go through !!

My gold star rosemary and my silkie seem to have a system going. I wondered where her eggs have been. She ALWAYS lays, but no eggs the past few days. I caught her today. She's been going into my broody silkies pen and laying, and then the silkie has been rolling it under her. So now I have at least two eggs that are due a week later than the rest of the hatch :/. You think it's ok to leave them? Or do I really need to candle and pull those last eggs? I'll have to start leaving her pen closed up while I'm at work. She still has access to the outdoors and Food and water. It's a little a frame tractor. Just no dusting i guess.

We were talking about you making deviled eggs out of quail eggs. The visual of you cracking and peeling the tiny things made us laugh for a solid 5 minutes! Too bad we're not closer to Goshen, we'd drop by to see your foodie works of art and take a dozen home to eat ourselves.

We're thinking of you & DH, sending tons of positive vibes your way. Downtown will be crazy busy this weekend with GenCon folks and beautiful weather for a canal walk, so there'll be plenty of reason for DH to get better and get out into the fresh air.

I can imagine it was quite strange to eat your first duck egg. I'm still trying to convince myself that eating my own girls eggs is not like eating my own grandchildren. HA! It STILL creeps me out, and I have to avoid thinking about it when I'm eating breakfast. It would help if the egg shells weren't BLUE--but I'm working on getting past it!

So sorry to hear about Violet. Our heart breaks for your loss, yet we're sharing the peace that she's not suffering. Hugs to you...

Again--HOW do you get anything GREEN to grow around your coop? Our girls stick their head through the chain link gate and have eaten everything green within 8 inches of the fence. You not only deserve an aware for being able to grow anything around the coop, but a big blue ribbon for growing something 10 FEET TALL!! Nicely done!
I think it is growing so tall because of all the free chicken fetilizer. I should measure the thing so I can see exactly how tall it is. The grass stays green around the coop area because the chickens don't really forage there. There is about a 8'' space near the fence that is mostly down to dirt, but only from us walking that area. The wiring I have for the first 2 feet up the run is doubled, 2''x4'' welded wire overlayed with 1/2'' square hardware cloth.
Bradselig- I am loving this weather too. My allergies get better with the colder weather. My problem is spring and summer. Everyone thinks I am weird when i say this but if I look straight at the sun it makes me sneeze! I think this is why my allergy doctor says that I should wear sunglasses. I hate sunglasses and dont every wear any! I dont listen to half the things he tells me anyways lol. I get 2 allergy shots every 3 weeks I have since I was 5.
You don't wear sunglasses? I can't do that. Must wear them, if only so the government can't read my thoughts.
To keep allergy symptoms to a minimum, eat local honey! Local as in harvested from the town/city you live in.
Yes, honey works for a lot of things, it's very helpful. Local, that is.

Here I go again... Seem to do a lot of whining here of late.

I received a stunning little addition to my flock yesterday thanks to the lovely pbirdhaven. He was a gorgeous pale splash bantam cochin with lots of comb at 10 weeks. Put his fuzzy butt into the quarantine pen and he ran around eating all the grass, scoffing the grain and picking at a water melon. Paying no attention to the girls who had lined up like soldiers at the fence line to check him out.
I was in heaven

He is cute as a button, does not seem flighty because of the girls...perfect!

Roll on night fall. Around 20 mins after dusk I pop my back porch flood light on and step outside. The quarantine pen fence is completely crushed. About 5 feet from the pen is my new rooster, mauled to death.
I have cameras on my house and it happens right after it gets dark. I can barely see the chicken on the camera running around frantically, but without the lights on I can not see what it attacking him. I have come to the conclusion it was a dog by how trashed the fencing was and the fact the little guy had a single bite and a broken wing but was left intact.

I am so frustrated and angry with myself and I feel like a big let down on pbirdhaven for giving me such a beautiful bird... I may just scream

I'm not a fan of bees as they sting of all things. But I thought orchards needed them. Maybe not but the 3 or 4 local orchards here all have bees flying around, landing on apple cores and such. They then sell honey. I just kind of thought the honey was from their bees, but I have never really looked into it.
I have alot of bees around, but I don't know where their hives are, and as far as I know, nobody around here has bee hives.
