INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So this is Sesame up close this afternoon. She's panting because it's hot. Maybe somebody can spot something I don't see. Taking her to the avian vet tomorrow, so yeah...

Hello all, hoosier here, I havent had any chickens in a long time, but im looking forward to some fresh eggs as well as the entertainment.I myself have no intrust in showing, but you never know.I do have grandkids and if they want to then how can i say no. As i said im just getting started lucky for me a friend in construction is supplying me with the wood for the coop with scrap wood from jobs competed. Im not sure if i want to start this late in the year or next spring.I think im going to start out with 4 birds and see how it go's. Im not sure yet what breeds im going to start with and thats what brought me here.I have been looking over the site and think i can find any answers to things i may need to know. What time of year is the best time to start a new flock? If it matters at all.
For a chicken coop, you might think about getting a utility shed. You can get them cheap or fancy. If you change your mind about chickens, you will still have a useable shed.

Or you could get chicks both this fall AND next spring!

Welcome to this group of chick-a-holics!

I got my girls this spring and we are egg watch for the next however many weeks it takes!!! Planning on more next year but about a month or two earlier.
I wish I was closer to you -- I have about 13 dozen in the fridge right now. I could use some more buyers!

Wish mine were laying already. However with only four it would not do your customers much good!!!

Mr. Tattoohead............One other precaution you should be aware of ------------

If you visit someone who has chickens while you are wearing clothes that have been in your chicken yard (shoes, in particular), you can infect their flock.

You could conceivably infect lots of flocks by wearing those shoes to a poultry show. There would have some wind or something to move it from the floor to the chicken's nostrils or something along those lines. I am by no means overly knowledgeable on the subject. I just know it is contagious and nasty.

Don't give the gift that keeps on giving. If it is Marek's, you may have to destroy your remaining flock.

Good luck. Hell of a thing to happen to you.

John
