Try to avoid candling too much. Also I am fairly certain you might want to lay off adding eggs later than the first bunch set. It messes with hatch time.
Well gang... I'm about to give up on chickens!! I had another dog attack today. The same dog!! And it went for me too so hopefully NOW they will put it down, like they should've before!!! Jchny- he got Bob (EE Roo from you). I was just telling Bob this morning how pretty he was getting and he was finally staring to show interest in the girls. So after another sherif call and Animal control call we will see!! Somehow I had a feeling this morning and had left them semi-penned, but some would fly ove the fence. And I was all cleaned up for a Drs appt when I heard something, looked out to see a hen flying which was unusual. It was raining here and I went running out, grabbed the umbrella, which I used on the dog after he was growling at me!! Next time I'll grab the gun first not the umbrella. Killed the umbrella not the dog!! ****!!! So I was late and wet for the Drs appt!
I was going to suggest McMurray, sometimes they have adult hens. Shipping will get you on bigger chickens though. You might want to check your local feed stores and see where the chicken swaps are. My TSC is having one next weekend through the FFA, or maybe it is 4-H, any way. Good luck!
Oh, read up on mites, lice, bumble foot, and gleet. You don't want to take home sick chickens.
No problem. I won't tell anyone. Who woulda thunk you would ever be wrong. Not me.Hmmmmmm. This would be the first time in my life I have been wrong. Please don't tell anyone else. We'll just keep this between us.![]()
The peepers would possibly make a mouth breather out of the chicken. From what I can see of the new plastic peepers, there is just a little nub that holds it in place, not a pin that goes all the way through.

Oh wow, lol. I really wish she was a Leghorn because that's what I thought I bought. She has red earlobes though. There is a slight tint to the eggs if you look at them in certain light. It is really hard to tell.Alright, it was my turn to catch up on posts. I've been cramming, because I had an evil, evil Chemistry test this morning that has left me with a mixed feeling of hopefulness and doubt.Oh, well. I guess I'll find out on Monday how I did.![]()
When you said you were getting a white egg, were you sure it was white or was it just a really light brown like in the picture you posted? I ask because, though her comb is small for a Leghorn, this bird has the shape--especially in the tail--of a White Leghorn.![]()
Hmm... that really sucks. I think if it was me, I would make sure the sheriff understood that the dog is destroying my property (chickens) and I think the dog is not going to live long, one way or the other. Law enforcement is supposed to keep the peace. If they think that you might kill the dog the next time, they should remove the dog to keep the peace. I would at least try to plant the seed. Not sure if I could shoot the dog. I think I would if I felt I had to.Well gang... I'm about to give up on chickens!! I had another dog attack today. The same dog!! Welcome to the thread. Glad you can read because you will get a lot of that on this thread, lol.hi everyone, New to BYC, and decided last week that chickens sounded like an exciting adventure, so, bought a coop this morning, and lumber etc for the run, the lady I've been trying to keep in contact with about EE's which I later found out were Ameracunas, has slowly started not replying me, and any others seem to act interested then no longer reply, the stuff is on its way, the run is being built, I have no chickens! I'm wanting pullets or very young hens preferably EEs, I really want blue/ green layers, flashy chickens, that's what drew me to them, I'm not completely chicken savvy, but I can read, that's where I have my knowledge from, located in northern Indiana, any help in locating some girls for me!?
Congrats! We got our third egg today! Nine days between the first two. Only three days Since the last one. Maybe we will still get a daily egg before the weather changes!
I might be interested in a CCL rooster but I won't know for another 20 days or so. If someone else wants them first I understand. I think for now I'm going to pass on the rhodebars for the same reasons you are selling them.Aright thinning projects, got 2 splash silkies (looks like a pair, but still too young), and 2 blue silkies (maybe a pullet and not sure of other, but again too young to be sure). Wanting to just focus on partridge and whites. Also considering selling Rhodebars. Have one pullet that just started to lay (been acting funny today, so she is separate from the flock and won't sell until she is acting normal again), about 16 week old cockerel, about 12 week old pullet, and day old pullet all unrelated. (with more eggs scheduled to hatch in a week). Only reason I'm considering is I think I only want one auto sexing breed. Also can add 3 ccl cockerels that are going on a week old and a Swedish flower hen chick that is also going on a week old.
Let me know if you are interested in any.
Thank you! I really like the shingles too even if it was scary seeing him up there. We have them on our woodshed too and its just so pretty with snow on it in the winter. I ordered a rooster weathervane to go on top of the cupola today too. Its so close to being done!! I'm not sure Max wants to eat them, but he desperately wants in. Either way, it will need to be worked on when I get some more time.I just love the shingles, and how your coops looking, just flat awesome!
So glad you kept Max! Hope he doesn't cause you problems with your birds. If you work with him cautiously you can break the killing instinct he has.
Little steps. It sometimes doesn't work, my brindle boxer MadMax (no kidding, Max for short) never broke of it.
He was impossible to train too. If he even saw a bird, or cat, went nuts!
Chewing the fence and digging in the dog run, and tried to maul one of my old barn cats. Had the poor thing pinned! He was very bird aggressive too.
If I leashed and walked him, he all but broke my arm restraining him from the birds. He was a stray we took in last year, I tried for months to retrain him.
He knocked my Dad down trying to "play" and that was the final straw. I rehomed him with a young couple that owned a horse ranch.
No cats, elderly people, kids or chickens, ugh.
Haha, love the peepers! Really changes the flocks personality when the bad apple is removed or corrected!
Your garden sounds heavenly. I hope we can get there someday too! I bought the winter rye too to add in our garden. I'm hoping it helps out with breaking down our clay. We are going to work towards not tilling so much either once we get the beds in permanent locations. You should post pics! When we were still in town I had raised garden beds. I would gather all the mulched leaves from the neighbors I could find and fill my garden boxes with leaves. Throughout the winter I would sprinkle rabbit poo over the leaves after we cleaned trays. By spring the leaves had composted and the beds were full of worms. Since we moved to our new farm, which was a field just a couple years ago, we have no trees & no leaves, which I'm really missing right now! Last fall for the first time I planted some annual rye as a cover crop in one of my beds after I dug potatoes. We're still spreading our rabbit poo & now have the alpaca poo & composted chicken bedding to use. For me, the best advice I have for garden beds is to keep adding as much organic garden amendments/compost as possible -- leaves being a terrific addition. I'm also trying to break us from using the tiller to preserve the soil structure that we're beginning to develop. My husband was able to build 9 garden boxes for me this year which each measure 4'x24' & I now have some permanent walking paths between them. Love, love, love the garden boxes. I do still have a really large area that we still need to till, but it's a work in progress!
And we got rain last night & it's raining now!!! Sprout little lettuce seeds!![]()
I found the brooder bottle caps worked really well with my quarantined birds, once I figured out that I had to poke a hole in the top of the water bottle (actually the bottom, but it was upside down). It wasn't my finest moment, but it all worked out, lol.Any suggestions for a water container that won't spill that I can put in Lavenders nest box? I'm afraid she won't get enough water if I don't put some next to her.
I'm being paranoid, aren't I?
he's my baby.![]()
I'm so sorry! I hope they can get rid of the dog instead of you getting rid of chickens.Well gang... I'm about to give up on chickens!! I had another dog attack today. The same dog!! Hi and welcome! If you stick around here for more than a few days you will find enough chickens for your flock. Pretty soon you will know all about 20 other breeds that you will suddenly NEED to have. I'm not kiddinghi everyone, New to BYC, and decided last week that chickens sounded like an exciting adventure, so, bought a coop this morning, and lumber etc for the run, the lady I've been trying to keep in contact with about EE's which I later found out were Ameracunas, has slowly started not replying me, and any others seem to act interested then no longer reply, the stuff is on its way, the run is being built, I have no chickens!
