INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I hope they aren't also, but you are in the right place.  There are several people on this thread who are able to tell you sex by color pattern when their feathers start coming in.  I'm not one of them, but I do like to guess.  After the chicks were about 8 weeks old, the worrying lessened, but not by much sorry!  around 5-7 weeks we started watching out for Cocci and were so relieved with that time frame passed.  I have tons of extra medicine for that if you live somewhere near us (if you find you need it).  The bag was about $20 but I'm not kidding, there is enough in the bag for at least a hundred birds, not the average backyard owner.  I'd mail it to someone if I didn't think I'd get flagged for mailing strange white powders:eek:  .

Good luck with your chicks. Everyone here will help you out. They are the best!

thanks for the info, I do have one who acts like a roo of that's possible, seems a little more independent than the others, and is feathering faster, only two weeks old though, I'll have to look cocci up to check warning signs!!! :)

I'm located off 421 (Michigan Rd) and 47 - between Sheridan and Lebanon. I work in Indy so I could also bring it to work one day if that helps. I am also in search of reasonably priced horse hay and may be making a trip out your way in the next month. I figured it could be useful to someone as a shelter! I have no need for it any more!

I'm more then an hour from Lebanon. and not sure when I'll have time to get away for half a day, so I'll have to pass, but I' sure someone else can use it. Thank You for the offer.

my russian orloff has gotten worse. Another chicken with a torn tendon. I just went through this with my SF a few months ago. i need to cull her. i do not habe the money to uthanize her, and i watched some youtube videos on how to kill chickens and seeing them flailing sround and all i just cant bringyself to do it. I know dhe us in pain though, i think it is something i am just going to have to try and get used to. I am sure i eill bawl my eyes out, but it is better than her being in pain. I know she usny going to get any better, she has not improved at all. I just font want to have to do it.
Using your best damsel in distress voice, call the police/sheriff in your area and explain your problem. Ask them if anyone in your area knows chickens and would be willing to do the deed for you.

Old Salt has a broomstick method.
Wrong! I have no idea what a broomstick method is.

I hold the chicken by the feet, put my foot on its head and pull hard until I feel the neck break. That makes the chicken limp. I then hold it on a stump or something and chop off the head with a hatchet so it will bleed out. Then drop it in the grass and wait for it to become still.

If you are not processing the meat, there is no need to remove the head.

I have 7 pullets from Meyers, Jan 28th hatch this year.
They are too aggressive for my flock of BO and silkies.

If somebody wants them they are free, otherwise they go in the freezer next week.

Also have a well mannered cockrel, 13 weeks old. He is very large fowel EE X silkie. He has all the silkie bits, five toes, feathered legs, black skin, blue ears, walnut comb and growing an interesting crest but has regular feathers. He is practicing his dance routine for the ladies and tidbitting with pebbles. He is also into crowing contests with his brother.

If anyone would like them please drop me a pm. I am in Marion county, far south east side, could meet someone if needed

I keep hearing about people trying to get their chickens to go in the coop when it rains.

It never occurred to me to try to enforce a "no wet chickens" rule. If they like it inside, they will go inside. If they like it outside, they will stay outside.

Chicks are another matter. If they don't have a mother to protect them, they are goners.
