you know it really irk;s me to no end when people refuse to learn. Or when some people "that say they know more then others " are flat RUDE !!!! If they know o much , then they should know how to educate without being FLAT RUDE!!!! I mean really, DID THEY TAKE THEIR FIRST BREATH OF LIFE KNOWING ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT CHICKENS???? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!
To some of us our chickens are out pets, friends, kids and so on, we are not into them for points or to make money. If you are great but have respect for those of us that JUST LOVE OUR CHICKENS. And BREEDERS: I understand that you are trying to better the breed, that's great too, but a mutt can be just as important to a person as the true bread chicken is to you. And EVERYONE starts someplace!! NO ONE is born knowing all!!!!! So why be So rude to newbies that they stop coming to this site for help or just to SHOW OFF THE BIRD OR BIRDS THEY LOVE?

Ok all, I think I'm done and I'm sorry if I offended anyone was not my intent. the Indiana site is the best. People here are polite and very friendly and helpful. I think I just need to stay away from them other places!!!! I just had to get that off my chest before I exploded. I feel so sorry for all the newbies I see getting treated like they are Dumb!! and get chased off BYC completely due to the rudeness, I'm new here and I have already seen that 3 newbies have just left saying that they could get dumped on by non-chicken people and didn't need to come here to get it too. It's just sad. Too bad all the sites cant be like this one.
Sorry I said I was done didn't I. ok for real I'm done now.
I must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.

Good morning all, hope you have a fantabulious day

its good to vent. I know what you mean. Some people are so rude. This is the only thread i go to. Why go anywhere else. The people here are great and willing to help with anything. We have so many members here now and it's awesome. I remember when there was just a few of us here when it all started. I consider everyone here even the ones i don't know , family and friends. If you ask a question ( no such thing as dumb question) somebody here will have the answer and if they don't they will help you find the answer. I can keep going on and on(just like your post :) ) and have nothing to say that is negative. We all may raise our flocks differently and as long as they are safe and healthy there is no wrong way to raise them. Ok i think im done. Or am i? :) Lol yes that's all. Hope everyone had a great day and got some much needed coop and yard cleaning like i did. sent from your friendly neighborhood poultry raiser! cluck... cluck...

yes you are right, the people here are friendly and very helpful. I have had a terrible winter the worst luck ever, and even though I know others had a bad winter also, they help when they could and offered support when they couldn't ( that was rare )
I have been out all day working on coop's... yep coop's more then one I worked on the temp. pen for the Silkies and the ISA brown chicks and got them outside today and and worked on the permanent Silkie house too, got all my brooders cleaned and chicks swapped around so they have more room now that the 5 are outside, I actually have an empty brooder!!!!!!!!!
yesss.gif
ya know what that means?????????????
lau.gif
now I can start looking real hard for Cochin chicks, and SF chicks... I have Blk. Copper Marans coming the last of April, and may have some silkie pullets coming soon too. I'm almost set!!!!!!

Chicken math is my down fall.....
Now I will be outside checking on the 5 all night, they had a blast this afternoon scratching in the leaves and the dirt I loosened up for them....... can you say DUST BATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the max. was taking pic's and was told " battery low " then nothing.... Sucked but oh well....
going to go eat now I'm hungry and my back hurts... eating at 10:04 pm WOW sure can tell it was a warm day....

raisinemright - how well does your Styrofoam 'bator do? Is it a still air? I'm dusting off my old one. How warm does yours get? I have to try and download instructions for it because mine is long gone.

Mother2Hens - I'm thinking of writing Einstein's story. It just keeps getting better! I wrote in college, so it's time to break out my creativeness soon! You asked where the rooster is from - he is the next door neighbor's. They used to have several chickens but when we lost several to coons last year, I think they lost all theirs but him. I believe he is a Black Copper Marans. We've pretty much adopted him.

jchny2000 - Thank you for the incubating / quail info. I'm anxious to get started, just need to make sure my LG works right and I read up on incubating a little bit. All the technical stuff makes me apprehensive!

I am so wanting warm weather! These few days of sunshine and higher than freezing temps are messing with my sinuses! And I really would like to get my pullets outside. They're getting a little crowded.

And.......suddenly I have quail! Sally hatched 4 of them out, but decided too much was going on and asked if I wanted them.......so being neighborly, I said sure!!! I whipped up a fish tank brooder with feeder and waterer. But I didn't have a heat source.

I've been reading on some other threads about using heating pads. So off to Wally World I went, and now the babies are curled up under their own little cozy heating pad broody. Seems to be working well. One of the littles is smaller than the others and not as stable. I'm hoping it was a late hatch and just needs to catch up.

Thank you Sally for getting me off my butt and getting going with them!

Mine is the hovabator Genisus digital and pre set, it has a fan and with the plastic tray for the bottom it's easy to keep humidity under control. The temp stays 99.9-100.1 I love it

Thanks, I do already have the save a chick electrolytes in their water, but I might try to find some cal manna powder tomorrow if it happens again.
Opps I had a typo. It is calf manna, not cal manna. Don't even know if there is such a thing as cal manna, but don't want to send you looking for the wrong thing or even worse something that doesn't exist. Talk about a wild goose chase.

Thanks everyone. Its been a rough night and day..
Shadow, my alpine doe, finally got her milk in, but refused the babies.
Back to the house they went. She actually shoved the stronger kid away with her hoof.
I got colostrum for them early this morning. My weak buckling didn't make it.
We lost him about 9pm, I went to feed the babies and he had passed.
sad.png

DH reminded me we just got these poor goats. We don't know what they were fed.
How they were cared for etc. I keep mine on Noble goat, excellent feed.
Their coats shine, and when Sophie was born last July, she was on her feet in minutes.
Shadow has favored her leg since we got her, and I feel the labor and delivery was even harder for her.
She is confined to the livestock trailer for now, and I am taking the baby out to see her during the day.
I am very concerned mastitis will set in! Her udders are full, and I cant get any milk out of her, even with the milk pump.

We are down to 1 BPR egg left to hatch!! 5 RIR's and 3 BPR's are out of their shells and doing good! Just one more to go. Fingers crossed for the last one.
Awesome news!!

good luck on the last few!

Excited to hear all your flock plans, BCM are just the sweetest birds, you will love them.

I have 28 pullet chicks I keep subdividing into more brooding boxes.Once I get electric run to my office trailer, we will have a "broody room" with linoleum floor installed. No more concerns for crowding, just keeping certain species apart. Waterfowl won't go in there, too MESSY!

And.......suddenly I have quail! Sally hatched 4 of them out, but decided too much was going on and asked if I wanted them.......so being neighborly, I said sure!!! I whipped up a fish tank brooder with feeder and waterer. But I didn't have a heat source.

If you need more holler, I am BURIED right now! You should see the black speckles on the hens chests around 2-3 weeks.
Roos get a reddish chest, no speckles. Usually my hen rate runs much higher than the roos, but I have hen luck too
roll.png

Eggs in 6-8 weeks. The higher protein you give them, more eggs and bigger birds you get.
I have 2 trays set, about 70 eggs and won't be setting any more til these are grown/processed etc.
When Sally is ready I have more eggs for her too. I love my lil RIR roo, named him Roscoe.
He is just a doll
love.gif

Penelope is quite the man of the house, the girls stick to him like glue. Adorable seeing them together.
My silver laced is especially drawn to him, gold laced follows too but will wander away.
I may keep looking for a Tolbunt roo for her.

Quote: LOL, there is pellets and powder, so be sure and read close...
I was going to get the 20lb powder tonite for the goats, and realized it was pellet.
I am sure its fine too, but I add it to the chickens feed also about 1x or so a week.
