As if I didn't have enough chicks that just hatched I picked up 12 more at Rural King today! Now to get my hoop coop put together!!

And the barn cleaned out...
And my cattle fence fixed...
And my garden planted....
I'm sure there's probably something I'm missing. Not a good time to be tired!

Congrats! I just got some millie eggs last weekend, set a dozen in the incubator. Keets are soo tiny and precious, I love the little guineas

I candled them over the weekend and I have 7 MF for sure. My chicken is going to be such a good mom I can't wait for May 4 to get here to meet these lil ones! No progress on the guineas but since they take so much longer to hatch, I'm not going to worry unless I don't see anything this weekend.

My thought is bumblefoot possibly, hard to tell with the fluffy feet. look for a small scabby sore on or between the toes.

Update on the rooster-I quarantined him for a few days, soaking him in warm water and epsom salt at night. On day 3, he was moving around better and I moved him back into the coop last night. Today he's been in the run walking around, much more active than before quarantine but I can tell he still isn't 100%. I have inspected his feet, legs, thighs even while totally wet and can't find an explanation on this one. He looks so funny when he is wet but I am sure he is very happy to be outside again with the ladies.

O and I just was floored to see after this harsh winter I have Oregano, Sage, chives (expected) and random onions grown already from last year.!
I have got to get my cold crops out! So much to do! So little time!

This is so great to hear!! I've seen onions and chives coming back so far too, signs of life are everywhere!

Oh, yes, there was one last thing I wanted to mention, specifically to those of you that keep bees. Bearing in mind that they live in Fort Wayne in an area with a lot of residential houses, my harp teacher's neighbor got a hive last year apparently. She was concerned that with so many houses around, bees would be a danger and maybe didn't belong there. Having absolutely no experience with bees or hives (or any will to gain such experience--I'm a little bit phobic of the buggers!), I figured it was one of those things where if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. Am I right in thinking this..? It kind of brought to mind the whole anti-chicken-in-the-city thing to me, but I guess I can see where she's coming from with her concerns about bees.

More importantly, I wanted to ask about beekeeping habits. Okay. This woman (the neighbor, not my harp teacher) adorns one of those net mask/hat things and apparently sits for hours on end, just watching the bees come and go from their hive. Is this... normal?

I mean, is there some method to this woman's madness, or is she just a few eggs short of a dozen, so to speak? Again, no experience with bees here. That's why I wanted to ask.

I've heard beekeeping is popular in Fort Wayne, they hold a school there once a year for people to get certified and that's how my DH got his. Honeybees are not aggressive but they can be curious. Mostly they are busy and don't want to bother with getting in your way. So winter, spring and summer they are pretty chill. In the fall though, if you get close to the hive, you will hear them buzz loudly and if you enter the hive without protection, don't say I didn't warn you! Outside of fall I don't always wear protection-just hang out with shorts, tank, flip flops or whatever. They may land by or near you to check you out but as long as you don't have dark clothes, strong perfume or shiny metal on, they move on quickly.

You know how watching chickens can be therapeutic and very relaxing? It is easy to go into a meditative state of mind while watching chickens and honeybees. Honeybees are very methodical, you can watch the inner workings of the hive just by sitting in front of the hive for a while. Not that I'm laying down in full gear for hours on end, but they are really cool to watch. I'd say your neighbor is pretty normal.

Just saw this posted this morning on the WNDU TV station online. Not the greatest way to start with the limited permits & having to pay for a permit, along with the written consents (why don't they do that for people wanting to get noisy dogs??). And I guess some people don't realize that fox & coyotes won't be the predators, but coons, possums & skunks that live in town! But at least it's a start.



GOSHEN It was a close vote, but chickens will be allowed in one more Michiana city on a trial basis.
There was a lot of debate at the Goshen City Council meeting Tuesday night. Advocates argued about the benefits of fresh eggs, while critics brought up fears about foxes and coyotes that might come into the city to prey on the chickens.
In the end, the council approved a two-year pilot program by a vote of 4-to-3. That's according to The Elkhart Truth.
The city will issue up to 50 permits for $25 dollars each. Applicants must present written consent from all adjacent property owners. Residents will be allowed to have six hens -- no roosters. They must be kept in an enclosed area.

I saw this on FB in regards to the decision and had to take a screenshot to share. What is this disease Edna is referring to? Anyone else want to move in next door to her with their flock just to show how amazing and non-smelly chickens can be?

right there with ya!!! with all the cleaning and fixing. I did get the goat pasture cleaned and raked today, my arms and back are killing me.

How about putting a large sign on the fridge door stating the price per dozen & "no exceptions!". Or a sign that says "One free dozen eggs with the donation of a bag of chicken feed. After the first free dozen, eggs cost $2.00" Or "Payment is expected for all eggs taken from this fridge. Your choice of payment per dozen: 1 large bag of chicken feed, 1/2 hour of shoveling chicken poop or $2.00" Or "Egg prices -- pick your payment per dozen: $10.00, $5.00 or $2.00. Please note that free is NOT an option!"

I also put eggs in Walmart bags when I need to save them for someone who will be stopping by & put their name on the bag. You could bag up all your eggs & put fake names on them. Tell your family that eggs in bags are already sold! Or at your next family gathering when everyone is a captive audience and seated around the table hand out bills and tell them you will be collecting payment before they go home!

Bees still are not my friend. I don't react as if they were spiders ANYMORE. But I will do my best to avoid being close to one.

I have 2 barn cats and I can honestly say that neither the cats or the chickens have made me sick. As for smells, the duck pool does have an odor but my newest coop is almost smell free now that the weather is warmer and we are increasing the venting by removing almost all of the south wall.

WOW that's a long time

It really illustrates the value of buying a quad or a set of trios. Even at $40 a chicken a quad would have me up and running so much faster.

He is north of Indianapolis. His different breeds and other info are in the members list. However you should be able to click his user name in my post and send him a message.

He has been very helpful even with breeds he does not have as he coordinates chicken trains too. It was with his help that I got 2 of my 4 currently favorite breeds of chickens.
