INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ChickCrazed ~Sorry about your pullet, but it's good you had the necropsy. Gregor is lucky to get such good care. I hope he pulls through.
Your run and pics you've posted before of your set-up looks fabulous! I want you to know that when you posted the first pics, probably two months ago, and you asked if anyone had ideas about how to keep chickens from being bored since yours are in pens (very nice ones!) while you're at work. At that time, I started collecting ideas, and I finally completed these suggestions:

Love it!! Thanks for doing the research!!! i like the log swing, I may replace one of my swings with a log to see if they like it better. I need to go looking for a chicken soccer ball!

Gregor was fantastic at the vet and was a big hit. People were coming in to get their picture taken with him. LOL. We did the acupuncture and he got a vitamin B shot. The diagnosis is potential traumatic injury (spine or head injury). Although the "M disease that shall not be named" was mentioned, everyone seems to agree that the symptoms don't match and it is very unlikely. He is on a neuro anti-inflammatory for a week and I was given a couple new ideas to try to keep him in the sling. I also watered down his food to get more fluids in him and he perked back up. The vet said that they typically don't see improvement with traumatic injuries in chickens, but we agreed that he has strength and movement in both legs and that we would give it more time. I am going to give it at least one more week and then make a decision. She agreed and said as long as a secondary infection doesn't arise he is worth more time! So, all in all i have some hope.

I am getting ready to make my reservations for the Chickenfest weekend. Thinking of staying in the Whitewater Campground. Is anyone else going to b camping out there? I don't want to be in a campground all alone for three days. They have tent sites for $15.00 per night. That's very cheap for a nice site.

We are planning on camping for the weekend, but I have not done any research yet. I will look into it. When we camp it is always in the primitive which is what that sounds like.

Anyone around the Fort Wayne area have any day old chicks? I have a few broody hens and their eggs aren't hatching.

Hopefully someone who knows more than me will also answer, but here is my thoughts on it.

How long have they been sitting on the eggs? Have you tried candling? From what I have been told (not by anyone on here) they will collect eggs for a few days. So that could be the reason for the delay. Maybe they didn't become serious about sitting for a few days after what you thought. If they are still sitting on the eggs and not knocking them out of the nest and they don't stink, they may still be good and hatch. I just had a broody hatch a chick out last Sunday, she stayed on the nest and another chick hatched yesterday. And she is still sitting on the nest so I am leaving the eggs in there until she gets completely off of the nest or they start stinking.

I don't have any day old chicks that I am getting rid of right now. But I might be able to help out with a few eggs. They are just barnyard mutts. Could be LF, Bantam, Bantam/LF crosses.

Like I said I hope that someone who knows more than me can help you out with some answers.

They have been on the eggs for well over the 21 days. I have candled them and they all seem to get to a certain place and then just stop growing. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

The hen knows instinctively when they won't hatch. I'd leave her eggs for a few more days while you are looking g for chicks, it can't hurt.

Yeah that was kinda my plan. I know that part of it has to do with them being in the coop with the other chickens but I don't have anywhere else to let them be broody.

Hey, all, thought I'd let everyone know what happened here with Po. It was a raccoon. My brother hiked out into the woods and finally came across the little guy's remains. :( We live-trapped the raccoon and disposed of it. I was very torn about doing so because I do have a soft spot for raccoons (we rehabilitated some when I was little, before we got chickens), but I felt like relocating it would just be giving someone else the problem. So I guess we don't have that to worry about anymore. There has been no evidence of return visits since, so I'm pretty sure we got the one responsible for Po's death.

My last remaining rooster, 9-year-old Toes (there's a story behind that name  ), is in quarantine with Tilly. I felt like that was the safest place for him, and he and Tilly are both doing well. Tilly's quarantine ends a week from tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she'll pass, but I'm not going to jump to any conclusions until we get there. ;)

Other than that, there isn't a whole lot going on here. I was stressing over a few things most of this week, so I have only been popping in to skim every once in a while. I think everything's going to be fine here, so I'm feeling better about it all.

Oh, and Elda cuddles. Elda cuddles make the world feel better as well.

P.S. I saw the flyer for the Chickenfest! I'll have to go back and read through it! I plan on making it, of course, so I'm looking forward to it! :D

Question 1: My two young roos that follow each other around all the time are starting to mature. One is definitely working on a crow. My question is, Would a roo try to mount another roo if they were still young enough to not realize it was another roo?

Question 2: One of the other Roos, Chewie, has a puffy eye. It had a little crud in it.

This is after wiping off the crud and putting some VetRx around it. Any ideas?
With all the dust bathing going on and kicking of dust, it may have just got some junk in it.

The Family that Dust-Bathes Together, Stays Together.

4x8 area of dirt to flop around in and they all sit in a 2x2 pile...silly chooks.
