INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I've never owned a duck as an adult (raised with them as a child) so I know nothing about how to care and raise them.... Right now I am in the process of learning the chickens (get my 1st flock of girls at the end of this week - cant wait) but once I master chicks... perhaps I'll try ducks next - but that may be years to come still LOL Cause I want to know everything about 1 species 1st! LOL But your little duckling is adorable!!

Haha, yeah, I'm with you there. I've had chickens for about 9 1/2 years now and Guineas for about 5 years, so I think I've got them covered. I will say, though, that you will never know everything about these guys, no matter how long you have them. They always find a way to totally throw you off!

I didn't notice it before this post, but it looks like I've gotten into a new species about every five years since I got chickens--wonder what I'll be into by year 15 of chickening... ;)

Anyway, a few pictures of the day! I went ahead and called today the official 3-month-old day for my babies, so here they are at exactly 3 months old:

Louise again because she is so pretty! :love Those eyes of hers!

And to finish the post, here's Wibbles today at 4 days old. :love It's not evident in this picture, but she's already so much bigger than she was just a few days ago! Ducks really do grow fast, don't they?

700

So, today's crisis with Wibbles was about a runny nose. Oh my goodness, runny noses are so bad with chickens, but I guess they're absolutely normal for ducks? That's what I got from some hurried research, anyway. She would get a runny nose every once in a while after eating today, though, and so I would run her a warm bath and let her wash her face, and all would be good until the next time she ate and got feed up her nose. :th This ducky is putting me through a lot of panic attacks!! Anyway, my next project for her is a deeper water dish so she can wash her face whenever she needs to, but can't fall in or swim unless I'm there to supervise.

thank you it wasnt easy but it was best for him. yes, he was a frizzled tolbunt rooster.  the poster above said he has one he is going to cull because it is mean but i have found when you move a mean rooster from his home he can have a change of heart, so to speak. their not sure how to act.

If the post u r referring to was that of Brad Selig, he knows when to be rid of a Rooster. Lol. He is a very experienced Chicken Nut ( Nut like the rest of us crazy chicken people) there aren't many of us on this thread that don't have at least one of "Brads birds". You could b right though a change of venue could possibly change his attitude. If u want th roo contact him I'm sure if it's not spoken for he'd give u a good deal on it.

Haha. I don't wear shorts other than around the house. So my legs are WHITE!

ROFLMBO... Well if any of you ever see me in shorts...find the pervert that cut my jeans off of me will ya!?!?! (And then get t th Hospital to get that sun blindness treated! [that how white MY legs are])!!!!

When my ducks (Darcy and Dingo) were her age I used a mini paint roller tray (one of the white disposable ones). Put it in their brooder box and they mucked up the water any time they wanted to. It isn't deep enough for her t drown but has enough she can splash n play without making a humungous mess. As they got older the splash pan grew with them until they were feathered enough to go outside with Waddles and Quackers to play in the "big girl pond" - although I guess I should say big ducky pond cuz as it turns out Darcy and Dingo are both Drakes!

Ok good night folks. or maybe considering th time I should say good morning? Hmmmm something else t think about t keep me awake unnecessarily!

Yep...I had a mother hawk attack several of mine and was so bold that she was eating one of my babies on the back doorstep of my house. I lost 11 birds to her and her chicks this spring. But since have protected mine with an overhead net...yes the fishing line was not enough when she had to feed the babies.
Thats bold for sure, sorry about your lost birds. I guess they don't land around here cause of my dogs, maybe?

I had decided that since it was getting so bold I was going to leave the kennel gate closed yesterday until I got home. The day before it was harassing them so much that they were afraid to come out of the little woods and go to the coop when it was getting dark. I had to escort them over...herd really.

I was glad I left the gate closed yesterday. In the morning when I went out to leave for work it was sitting about 6 ft. from the enclosed run on the big "farm gate" that's right there and only stands about 4 ft. high. The chikens were hollering and I looked over to see what all the commotion was about and saw it. I went out to scare it away and I declare if I didn't get within about 3 ft. of it before it decided to depart.

And then it only flew across the road to a utility pole and sat there waiting for me to leave. And when I returned in the afternoon it had been somewhere low and as soon as I got out of the car, it flew up and onto the neighbor's shed roof.
I'm assuming all your kids were safe and accounted for? I hope.

Forgot to say that today, it didn't visit at all after I got home. I opened the gate at about 2:00 and they were out running in peace.
bet they were happy critters...

does he look anything like my beautiful Spazz did? i got him from California and he was sick for months. he never even meet the ladies. i did every antibiotic there was and he would improve then get sick again. i finally culled him after about 6 months of treatments. broke my heart.
very pretty, too bad he couldn't shake whatever his problem was. 6 mths sure sounds like you worked hard trying to help him.

Ok I need "help". What do you think these beauties are...Pullets??? Cockerels???? Talking about the Welsummers.

looks to me like you have 1 of each, based on how mine looked at that age.

Ok good night folks. or maybe considering th time I should say good morning? Hmmmm something else t think about t keep me awake unnecessarily!
night um morning, your going to bed so we'll say g-night..
