infected eye?

It's probably not an eye infection in itself, it's probably a respiratory infection. They commonly start that way. What I would do (another opinion again) is give her 1/2 cc or a tad more orally of Tylan 50 for 3-5 days. Unless you can give injections, then do 1/2 cc in the breast muscle.

she is much much worse. she is now falling over and will not eat. we are going to put her down tonight. I am so so sad. I am cleaning the area and putting in new straw where her cage was. I did an antibiotic, duramycin- 10 in water to help stop the spread of what ever this horrid thing may be. I had her in a cage so I hope it keeps the infection down.. the eye got better and now is swollen and as I said she is falling over and cant see out of the bad eye. I am so so sad to put her down but don't want her to suffer.

so so sad she is only 2 years old... and a dear.

I just saw the one talking about giving her tylan. is that like Tylenol or something I get at the farm store. I am so sad. if I can save her I want to but I just don't know if I can. she seems so far gone.

we had to give our ducks shots for, get this, lead poisoning. our son spilled some old led shot my husband used to fill shotgun shells with and we had to take ducks in and then put on shots... never put the needle in your teeth I almost did that out of instinct trying to hold the wiggling duck...they had warned us about this and that is what saved me... I will hold off putting her down and will get this antibiotic if possible in the am... and give her a shot asap, how much do I give her again? I am feeling so overwhelmed and can not tell you how much I appreciate all the fellowship and help I get at this website.

Yea, you can get Tylan 50 at Tractor Supply. I just went through 5 days of injections on a rooster than was gasping and gurgling when he breathed. He recovered like a champ. Please try it if she's alive in the morning. It may already be too late. Tylan 50 is specific for respiratory problems. The Duramycin you were putting in the water is a rather weak antibiotic. Anything given orally isn't very effective. The injections are easy to give, in the breast muscles on *their left side, NOT the side the crop is on. You can feel the muscles in there and they hold real still for some reason. An injection in the leg muscle is the next best place. 1/2-3/4 cc a day for 5 days.

Like Ksane said, 1/2cc.

I have it on hand but have never used it. People I trust highly recommend it.

Watch your flock close. Listen for any sinus sounds like raspy breathing, sneezing, etc. Read up on MG and the other infections so you are prepared. If your sick bird has MG/MS or one of a few other diseases than even when it gets better it will be a carrier. Most states will do testing for free or a minimal charge. Most of all don't panic when you are reading this stuff. There is a good possibility you just have a weak bird that is getting hit with secondary infections. It happens.

Purple chicken is right. I'm 90% sure my roo got sick from getting soaking wet and then chilled. I always have to go out and personally put him in the coop if it starts raining in the daytime. At night he goes right in on his own but not during the day when it rains. I just found out that they can get respiratory problems from that. I always thought it came from a virus only.

ok so I will get it to keep on hand... I will watch close for any breathing problems or sneezing. if she dies do I bury the body, burn it or send it in the garbage. I am worried of it spreading. my chickens seem to get sick alot I just don't get it... I try to keep them clean and stuff... my neighbors say birds just get sick and I don't lose more than anyone else but feels like I do...

It's just the (un)luck of the draw. Maybe you notice sick birds and your neighbor doesn't. I know the feeling. Just do your best and keep doing your best, it's all we can do.
