infected eye?

Ditto

Even before I had an outbreak of MG I had chickens drop from time to time. As a newer chicken owner the loss of just one bird was horrific. As time passed, as did hundreds of chicks and chickens through my incubators, brooders and barn, I got used to losing birds for various known and unknown reasons, including a few who for whatever reason didn't go back in the barn during cold rains like Ksane's roo.

ok so I gave her .5 of the tylan in shot form. she is so bad.. she has her neck all twisted funny and is just skin and bones. I am going to tube feed her in the am if she makes it. I had to give her the shot in the leg as she is so thin. now that i have used some of the med is it necessarily to keep it in the fridge, looks like it is still sealed do to the rubber cover that you stick the needle though. I know know why they say a shot in the dark when talking about taking a chance. I had to give her a shot and it was getting dark. I had stuff come up that I could not break away from and I got her the meds asap. I so hope she is not suffering. why is she having her neck twisted in that funny way with the bad eye facing the ground? I think you may be right I am checking my birds often and probly just more sensitive to the loses.

farmers don't get near enough respect for there lifestyle. its hard to grow your own food and raise your own animals...

I hope she makes it though the night. but more than that I hope she does not suffer alot...

oh and I want to google the mg but is that what it is called. just mg or is there a long name it would be under. I hate giving shots.... but I did it. my son screamed and ran as I was making sure there was no air in it by squirting just a bit out. I don't know he just hates neddles so much, after much reassuring he calmed down and held the meds why I gave her a shot.. she went back in her cage and is still holding that neck funny with the bad eye facing the ground..

Yes, it is hard to grow your own food. It's worse when we get to know the animals. We do as chicken people get used to things happening. Losing birds is part of having them.

The neck may be a few things. Most likely she is just too weak to hold it up. It will take a few days for the Tylan to take effect. Getting some nutrition in her is critical. Yogurt works well.

You are doing very well with this. Nice job.

ok so I will get yogurt in her in the am, I may even go down and give her some tonight. is there anything elese I can give her. can I just put yogurt in her mouth or do I need to tube feed? I am very tired tonight and not feeling well so if I can just put yogurt in her mouth that would be better for me... should I mix in oatmeal or just yougert. also will she choke on the yougert. wow takes that long to work, I for some reason thought it would be sooner, I am worried she will not make it...but giving it to God and I will do all I can on this end and appreciate everyone's help... what is that mg is it contiguous to people and dogs? I am wondering if I should get her in out of the cold but don't want family to get sick...

Don't worry about MG right now and no it's not contagious to humans or dogs, mostly just chickens.

You can mix some layer mash or oatmeal in with the yogurt and just use your finger to force some into her mouth. Make her drink some water to get it donw into her crop. Even if you get 1/4 oz into her that is something.

I'm assuming in her condition it will take a few days for the Tylan to take effect. That is a guess, nothing more however most antibiotics need some time to become effective.

Yes, it is in God's hands but I believe God works through people.

She's not contagious to you or the dogs, I'd bring her inside. Honestly, it doesn't sound like she'll make it but at least if she's inside she can die in a warm place. I think she's just too weak to hold her head up, too. Liquids are more important at this point than solids.
MG is Mycoplasma gallisepticum. But it could be so very many things, it's impossible to tell unless you have a necropsy done. There's a good website of diseases at http://www.thepoultrysite.com/diseaseinfo

I am amazed to say she is holding her own. she is still doing that really weird thing with her head and neck. she twist's it like she can not tell how to hold it upright. it is really weird. she is eating I gave her some soft scrambled egg with oatmeal and peas all squahed up with gator aid. she ate and is drinking. if she was not so thin and did not do the weird thing with her head and neck, oh and the eye looking bad I would say she is fine. the other eye looks good and her comb in a deep red. I just dont get it.. I may google the weird head and neck thing.. I am unsure what to google though...

My guess on the neck is she is so weak from what she has gone through however there are other diseases, such as Mareks, that do exactly that to the neck. The condition is sometimes called wry neck. Give the Tylan some time to work and keep posting updates. I'm thrilled to see she made it another 24 hours.

I thought Mericks was something baby chicks had trouble with? do you think I should give the whole flock a dose of that tylan in the water?

she acts very weak and acts like she does not know which way is up. I just dont get it...
