We had a hen go broody and we let her keep the eggs. Unfortunately they did not all hatch at the same time so once the first one become mobile she left the remaining eggs in the nest. She’s been a great mama raising her single chick. We opted to keep them with the flock and mama won’t let any of the others near her. For 2+ weeks now, she’s been in a nesting box sitting on the chick every night - until last night when she was roosting with all the other hens and there was no sign of the chick anywhere in the coop or the run area. We assumed something ate the chick, but she was back outside with the mama hen about an hour after we let everyone out of the coop this morning. She’s clearly been attacked by something while she was away, so I’ve isolated her from the flock, including mama, so she can heal. Is that the right call? Do I need to do anything to help her heal? What do you think attacked her?
