Injured Duck

Thats what i feed mine for treats, Good and cheap

Are muscovie protected there? mabye you could make a little area and keep him, if hes not crazy and wild

Or mabye get some muscovy ducklings, They are the sweetest youd love em

The HOA would never allow it where I live. For the 7 years i've lived here i've been feeding these ducks daily. Then all of a sudden a couple of months ago, they stuck signs in the grass by the pond saying "Please don't feed the ducks". This is Florida where they're not protected, and I believe it was Miss Lydia who said they're considered a nusiance here.
I ignore the stupid sign and just make sure no one is around to see me feed them. I'm sure it wasn't in my HOA contract when I bought the place, so new rules made after 7 years don't apply to me. At least that's how i'm viewing it. :)
I'd love to have my own yard to make a little area for him. But there's a couple of huge planters by my patio where they come to nap behind where they feel protected. Once a year there will be a clutch of ducklings...but out of the usual 10 or 12, only like 2 survive with so many predators that eat them.
I watched in horror once when a heron swooped one right out of the water and the Mama tried to fly after it for her baby. It was heartbreaking to see. But that's nature I guess. The heron has to eat too.

I picked up the Friskies cat food today and duck appeared early so I ran for the bag and poured a small bowl for him. I held the bowl while he started vacuuming up the contents with his beak.

It's difficult because the others horn in and scare him away. He ate half the bowl and waddled away because the others were making him nervous. So I poured the rest into the grass and the others ate it all. Even a white ibis came to have some.

He stuck around but just stood there staring at me as if waiting for something. I wondered if he wanted the bread. So I went in for a slice of whole wheat and as soon as he saw me come out with it he ran right up wagging his tail!!

So....even though it's not good for him, he seems to prefer the bread over the Friskies. As soon as he saw the slice, he went nuts and ran right up to me for it. I know it's not the best food for him, but I do make sure it's whole wheat, and never white. And besides, it's much easier to feed to him this without the others stealing it away.

I can just toss pieces right into his beak and the others get nothing lol. And I can just use the Friskies to distract the others while feeding him.

I tried to get a close up of his beak to show the black part. It seems to be looking better each day and it's actually under his beak, so no part of his beak is missing. The black part is on the flesh right underneath. I think it's just a scab from the injury. Here's a couple of pics.
You have to zoom in to see because the phone scares him and I couldn't snap one closer. The second pic looks like he's smiling with his beak open. :)

He is gorgeous maybe you can feed him a few out of your hand along with the bread. My Muscovys love to catch bread and grapes all but my drake he lets it hit him in the face he won’t even try lol.

I'm scared to put my hand too close to their bills. Once when I had bread one of them jumped up to get it and those bills snap hard! It didn't hurt, but startled me, so I like to keep a bit of distance. Your Muscovys eat right out of your hand?
