Injured Hen:(

She really us the sweetest! Her name is Grace. She will snuggle up to me now and let me doctor her up... her entire head is bruised but the movement in the eye is a first. Wednesday it didn't even look like she had an eye! So I'm gonna buy some poultry vitamins...any suggestions? And take your advice on letting her calm down after the fight! I just don't want her to starve:( All of you are amazing!!!

I was told Nutri-Drench for poultry and that's what I've been giving mine. I still have to spoon feed her.
I was also told it's ok that she not eat for a couple days, as long as she's drinking.
I was also able to get some Tylan (antibiotic) from our vet and I've been spoon feeding her that , mixed with water and the Nutri-Drench.
I was told they're supposed to have a min of 4.5 tspns a day of water/liquid.

Sorry about all the 'I was told" but that's the only reason I know, lol

Many people (so I've been told ;) ) have luck by drizzling a slurry, or thin gruel like consistency, liquid along the beak line and the food will make it's way in. I didn't have luck with that & have stuck with spoon feeding for now.
I just take a deep bowled spoon and lift it to her beak. Some of the liquid catches on the hook of her beak, and she will 'sip' it until she has enough for a swallow, then she'll lift her neck and drink the whole thing. It takes a lot of time, lol.

You've done a great job @charity lawson! :hugs Truly BYC can be a life saver. Anytime you have a chicken that is sick or injured, putting them in a big dog crate with food and water and towels or hay helps them to recover without others bothering them. Loved how @Wyorp Rock mentioned how Orpingtons will usually calm down. Mine actually love to receive a bath and blow dry....they almost fall asleep as I'm pampering them (only when they're bobos get dirty, so maybe once a year). Please keep us posted, but I second and third what everybody is saying about the raccoon. Please get hardware cloth on your coop and make sure ANY hole is covered. :thumbsup

Since she only wants liquids I would suggest add sugar to her water or even making barely water... maybe even offer her some beef or chicken broth or a soup that is very liquid. When my hen got messed up it was suggested red cell (it's in the equine section) to add a dash to the water. You could try milk soaked bread, yogurt, cottage cheese... too you might be able to entice her, cool watermelon... green tea for drinking and a wash of wounds. I use turmeric powder on wounds layered over with bag balm or Vaseline, but a good antiobotic ointment like neosporin is good, there are lots of different products to help with healing. Keep her away from the other birds right now in a crate so she has nice calm time to heal up.

Yes she is drinking!! I have to guide her to the bowl but she drinks... I just wasn't sure on how long they could go without food... this is her right now... some of the gunk is the the terramycin and on top of her head is triple antibiotic ointment!!!

That Terramycin is wonderful! Within 5 mins of applying she opened one! That's great you knew to use that!

You're so kind thank you!

So we have traps and snares set up all over... this is the first time the coon actually sticks it's hands in our coop to grab out chickens so we layered it with smaller chicken wire in hopes it'll just leave them alone. Haven't got a coon yet but we have put out bait... now we just wait! I have been super upset about my hen too :( my other Orpington has a narely scratch on her neck that has skin falling off but I'm flushing that out with peroxide and then putting triple antibiotic ointment on it!! My poor babies:(

Aww! I'm so sorry! :(
And you were even prepared!! They sure do cause a lot of problems and heartache.
I didn't even know they would attack chickens.

I see the that the experienced people are here, so I'm going to quiet down ;) but I'll keep checking in :) Good luck!!

Epsom salt bath can help with soar muscles she no doubt has though be careful with her wounds. Don't be afraid to use calming scents like lavender. You might try human homeopathic "rescue remedy" as she is no doubt stressed.
There are a ton of remedies for the bruising that are used on humans that will work on chickens... aloe Vera, tea bags, lavender oil, cold compress first 48 hours for no more than 15 minute treatments after 48 hours than you can use warm compresses, various vitamins, lots of different herbs and even cooked cabbage made into paste and more... gentle message. Pretty much if it works on you it will work on her.

You may want to use saline flush for open wounds, rather than peroxide. Peroxide can cause the skin to die in the area, it's used for debridement in hospitals. Removal of dead skin, also no ointment or anything else that has a pain reducer in it, unless proscribed by a vet. Glad things are going a little better.
