Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 3 yr. old hen who has an injured leg. I looked out the window earlier and saw my Saint Bernard standing over my hen and he snatched her up by the wing. I gave the command for him to "drop it" and he did. She was wet with his drool so I wrapped her in a towel and held her until she calmed down. I have her separated from the rest of the flock for now. There are no open wounds. She is limping on her right leg and she complains when I move it in any direction. Should I make a wrap for it, or just leave it alone and let it work itself out? How long should I give it before I need to worry?

I would wait until tomorrow, letting her rest, and hopefully take food and water in the morning. Then let her out to walk a bit. Look her legs over for swelling, bruising, making sure that she can move toes and feet. Somdtimes just confining to a cage with food, and water containing vitamins, for a week or two can help heal an injury. Splinting may help if it appears to be a broken bone. Chicken slings or chairs can also be useful in some cases.

Thank you Eggcessive:) She's eating and drinking this am, but won't move. She complains and guards her leg when I move it and will try to take a step when I pick her up to stand, but can't bear weight and limps. I have her separated from the flock and will watch and see. Thanks for the advice.
