Injured young Am Buff gander

Hummm.......for some reason I didn't see your post of two days ago?????????? Don't know what happened with that. Anyway, I've been watching them pretty close and it appears that Will has figured out a way around the foot grabbing thing. He is approaching her from the other side, and she doesn't grab his foot from that angle. This morning he went to get on and made the mistake of going at it from the original position and she got his foot. They were right under me as I was running water from the hydrant, so I reached down to put my hand between her and his foot. It threw her off enough that she forgot about his foot, thank goodness. I watched him off and on all day and I didn't see him limp even once. I washed it and checked this evening and I didn't see much change in the appearance, I think it's just better because it didn't look like it hurt him as much.
I have gathered the eggs, mainly because I have been afraid they would freeze or she would break them. She laid another one this afternoon, but I didn't get to it. I'll collect it tomorrow and hope that it is OK, I don't think it's suppose to get as cold as the last few nights. That will make 4 eggs. Do you incubate, and if so what temp and how long?
Oh I almost forgot, Will definitely has demonstrated his changed disposition. He was on the back porch when I stepped out the door with the dogs and the border collies and heeler go out on their own, but the little pekingese mix always needs to be on a long line. He's a real stinker and always wants to chase the ducks and geese and doesn't read their threatening postures. Well, I think he understands Will's lingo a little better now. Will got a hold of him and I had to pull him off of Lucky. Lucky was lucky, he didn't get hurt as bad as he could have, there was no blood, but clearly Will means business and doesn't want the dogs around Kate.
I'm happy to hear Will is doing much better and figuring out the best way to approach Kate. I don't incubate and I have been collecting Missys eggs and we have been eating them, if you decide to incubate then go to Petes thread about hatching, I think most on this site use it.

I have mini dachshunds and they are scared of the geese, and pretty wary of the ducks but I don't let them go after the ducks at all, or the chickens. now my mixed med. size dog would get my gander I'm sure if she had a chance to do it, she has gotten him once and honestly the gander has been so mean to her I really don't blame her but I keep the geese away from the dogs when they are all out together. Training the dogs to leave the flock alone and vise versa. My duck pecked my mini on the butt when she was running by her so it's always on going, I just have to be there to keep the dogs from retaliating. Thanks for updating on Will and Kate. keep us updated on whats going on and especially if you decide to hatch some eggs.

Lydia, if you're still getting notices of this thread, I thought I'd let you know I've decided not to incubate any eggs. I remembered what you said, that a lot of times geese just get dumped and I don't want to contribute to that. We have a city pond and I have noticed that there are a lot of geese there, and that's not to mention the many, many ducks that have always been there. I knew the ducks got dumped there, but it never occurred to me that people would drop of their geese. I know they can be problematic if a person wants a pretty yard, but I've put very inexpensive fencing around the flowers and it appears to be working.
It did cross my mind to sell Kate and Wills eggs and the Call duck eggs that aren't being set on, but I don't know if that would just do the same thing, the dumping problem. I'm just so desperate for money right now that for the first time I'm thinking of trying to get some money from my birds

Will has finally become very adept at mounting Kate and if she does get a hold of his leg/foot he can get it away from her pretty quickly. His toe is finally healed up and there is no swelling in it at all. His poor little chins are kind of scabby from her grabbing him, but it's so much better than it was. Some times I do wonder if he tries to make her pay for hurting him because he'll grab her head and neck at times and yanks her around without even trying to breed her, however all in all they're doing pretty good.

Hope your spring is going well.

Hi thanks so much for coming back, I'm glad to hear Will and Kate are doing well and that his toe has finally healed.

I understand completely about not hatching eggs, and I totally agree with you that way too many waterfowl are dumped every year. It's almost like they aren't living things just to be thrown away after the lil cuteness wears off. Heart breaking. Having Buffs I bet you could sell their eggs, they are such gorgeous birds and your calls eggs would probably sell too, be a way to bring in some money. I have inexpensive fencing around the beds I don't want my geese. ducks and chickens getting into works very well. Please update periodically what going on in your neck of the woods, Spring is begining to look beautiful, Hope it is up your way.
