Internal Pipping

Finally! They take so long but these two seemed to really like taking their time.

Remind me again what's up with egg 2? Did it just not develop quite right?

Yeah something wasn’t quite right. When I candled 1 and 3 before lockdown they looked like they had a healthy amount of air in there and were shadowing.

Egg 2 just looked way too far behind them.

Egg 1 is zipping but slowly. I thought hearing Egg 3 hatch might have spurred it on but I assume it’s busy absorbing everything. Fingers crossed I will see it hatch before bedtime!

😭Just like Sgt_P - I've just got a speck of dust in my eyes!

Congrats what a cutie.
Anything from the other 2?

Not yet! Egg 1 is zipping slowly, hoping it’s just busy absorbing everything before making a big move.

Unsure what will happen with egg 2. When the others are in the brooder I’m going to candle it and see if I can see what’s going on.

yes, good idea. You can't do anything but have a lok and see what's happening. Fingers still crossed for you though

We have another! Chuffed to bits!

Just candled egg 2 and there’s no movement whatsoever. Not looking good I don’t think. Does anyone else have experience of this?

Not with ducklings. When I have a chick this late in incubation who hasn't internally pipped it's because it's DIS (dead in shell). You should be hearing noises, scratching or peeps. Or seeing some movement.

You can open a small hole in the aircell to take a peek. This gives you a better idea of what happening. After the hole is made if I see no movement I gently prod it with a q tip. If it's alive and starts moving, no harm done. Just pop it back into the incubator. If you have no movement in response to the qtip you can cautiously proceed with an eggtopsy.

Thank you, there was absolutely no movement from candling tonight so I doubt there will be any movement with a prod either, but that’s definitely worth a shot. So sad. Can see the outline of his little bill but it’s not in the air sac.

Can you recommend any good articles on eggtopsy?
