International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

You wont be disappointed! I love mine. We had the older model before we got the digital and loved it too. We had it forever.. and my husband had it even before we met. It still worked great at 11 years old, it was just the wood in the bottom was getting bad. The newer ones arent made out of wood. My sportsman holds temp rock solid and its very easy to control humidity. I have to use a smaller humidity pan than the one that came with it because the humidity was staying too high. I use a tupperware bowl instead.. redneck ingenuity! Works great.. perfect humidity for my climate. You may be able to use the pan depending on your ambient humidity of your climate.

I have an old GQF 1202. I had to replace the humidity pan with a Tupperware also. It holds the humidity at just the right %

BREAKING NEWS FOR BREAKING BROODIES!

suggested by my friend's vet: ASPIRIN!!! he gave it to his silkies and they forgot about sitting.

my araucana got broody again but I don't want it. she hatched chicks 2 months ago. I gave her 1/4 of aspirin and 2 hours later I found her outside in the run. I am not sure when she left the nest.

hens get broody because their temperature gets high. aspirin lowers it. that's all.

I may just have to try that! I have a serama that just raised babies that are barely 5 weeks old and she is trying to sit again! She just started laying again last week.

What kind of incubator are you using, I'm in the market looking for a good incubator. I need one i don't have to constantly watch, I'm always working so i cant check them like i want so i need something i can set and forget. Any suggestions?

Now is probably a good time to check CL for ones that people want to get rid of, if they have decided not to hatch any more.

I love my Brinsea Octagons for set-and-forget. I also got a new Brinsea Mini this year for assists and leftover broody eggs and such. For hatching small batches, I like the new Nurture Right 360. The view is amazing! Also bought 3 used GQF cabinets off CL, older models and I’ve only tested 1 so far, but it’s fantastic.

Well im down here on the gulfcoast and humidity down here most of the time is, on a good day now 90-100%. It's like being wrapped in blanket in a sauna. Especially in the summer, so I'm sure that's something i'll have to figure out for sure.

breaking broody update:

after giving a 1/4 of aspirin to my little broody araucana she spent all day outside. in the evening she returned to the nest. I put her with another flock on their roost for the night. in the morning I gave her 1/4 aspirin again and put her back with her flock. she has been out all day long.

my friend put 2 aspirins in 1,5 l of water for his silkie's flock. they drank it in 2 days and stopped thinking about sitting. therefore I hope that my araucana girl will not need more aspirin.

Once you get your incubator fired up you can let it run empty for a bit until you get the humidity on point. It may take some adjusting with different sized bowls but you'll get it worked out. You may not even need a humidity pan and may benefit from dry hatching like some climates do.

Welp. Little chooks are 10 weeks old. I decided to let everyone freerange together. Chester saw the new cockerel from about 30 ft away tweaked his head sideways, then full speed tore at him. I think he musta been going 20mph. They tumbled for another 30 ft and Steve says to me "you better get on that". Pretty sure Chester wants him dead. It was nasty.

My old roo wasn't nearly as mean to chester when he was a cockerel. I want both Roos so I guess PITA here I come. Someon please tell me these boys can work it out. I'd so much rather freerange daily.

FYI: there is a new thread in this forum about someone hatching a white chick from eggs that were only blue and black marans. I don't know enough about it but am hoping someone knowledgeable replies :)

They could work things out. Just be careful that things don't get too out of hand. I am not the person that knows anything at all. Lol It could be a recessive white chick. I have seen threads where they had hatched recessive white chicks. Now someone that knows something can chime in. :D

Well finally! They are officially all gone! It was funny I had given up finding homes for the last 4 hens and rooster. I thought I will just keep them for eggs till winter and then make soup. I pulled my add a week ago. Someone contacted me yesterday wanting them. Just came and got them. I needed their pen to make room for my Birchen and Blue Birchen. I should be getting them in a week or two. :celebrate

So it's approaching 100F and we go pondside. Our favorite dog seems to have an issue with us swimming and more than nipped Steve. I got nothin at the house but I have blue cote. This one prolly needed stitches but o'wells. Happy trails! The dog hasn't come out from her hides hole.

Ouch! Yes, probably needs stitches and antibiotics. Should go get that checked out. Praying for a quick healing.
