International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

And here is Skint, the cockerel who got the chunk of skin torn off his neck by a gamecock. He is the full brother to Butthead. This sounds like a redneck drama series doesnt it??

He has white under his hackle, but better tail angle. He isnt as big as Butthead either. His tail isnt nice and wide open like Butthead's. But he does have good back width. He inherited his sire's halo. I may keep them both free ranging as spares. You never know when disaster might strike.

his white under his hackle might just be due to the injury.

BREAKING NEWS FOR BREAKING BROODIES!

suggested by my friend's vet: ASPIRIN!!! he gave it to his silkies and they forgot about sitting.

my araucana got broody again but I don't want it. she hatched chicks 2 months ago. I gave her 1/4 of aspirin and 2 hours later I found her outside in the run. I am not sure when she left the nest.

hens get broody because their temperature gets high. aspirin lowers it. that's all.

Here are my White Legbars! Sorry to derail the thread off topic for a moment. Just want to share my new babies! :D

I think I got 4 girls and 2 boys best I can tell. The little dark chick is the Cream Legbar pullet. It is a lot darker than my CL pullet chicks. Looking forward to seeing them grow.

Here are the ones I think are girls.

What kind of incubator are you using, I'm in the market looking for a good incubator. I need one i don't have to constantly watch, I'm always working so i cant check them like i want so i need something i can set and forget. Any suggestions?

Its a GQF Sportsman 1502 digital. I usually hatch in my little Hovabator Genesis 1588 which is a smaller styrofoam incubator that is also good.

When I have smaller batches to hatch I put them in a big plastic tupperware platter I bought. I drilled a few air holes in the side and use paper towels to line it. I think its a Rubbermaid container. I lock the eggs down in it and put the lid on and just sit it in the hatching drawer in the bottom. This way I dont have to raise the humidity of the other eggs in the Sportsman. I set and hatch weekly so at any given time I have eggs at all different gestational ages in there. I cant raise the humidity of the sportsman to lockdown because it will affect the other eggs. As the chicks start hatching inside the tupperware container the moisture is held in and they create their own humidity. It works great.

I took my turner out of my Genesis and use it to turn eggs Im saving up to go in the incubator so I dont have to remember to turn them. :)

That make a lot of sense, i got one of those coolerbators thats fine if you can sit there with it and baby it. And also i see what you mean about locking them down in the tubberware, i was wondering about how all that worked on the sportsman, i think that's the one im going to get also.

You wont be disappointed! I love mine. We had the older model before we got the digital and loved it too. We had it forever.. and my husband had it even before we met. It still worked great at 11 years old, it was just the wood in the bottom was getting bad. The newer ones arent made out of wood. My sportsman holds temp rock solid and its very easy to control humidity. I have to use a smaller humidity pan than the one that came with it because the humidity was staying too high. I use a tupperware bowl instead.. redneck ingenuity! Works great.. perfect humidity for my climate. You may be able to use the pan depending on your ambient humidity of your climate.
