International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well it sounds like you got a plan, I'm still waiting to see how theses little grow outs mature before i come up with my masterplan, but i do got a couple ideas floating around im my head. Out of 60 chicks i ended up with 27 cockerels and 33, after weeding through those i ended up with 19 pullets and 11 cockerels that get to stay and mature. Which i was really surprised i ended up with that many.

Yes that is really great! I wish I had that many to cull through, but luck was not on my side with raising Marans this year. I've raised a ton of Legbars and Games though.

I love those game birds, they are gorgeous. I started out breeding wheaten and blue old english bantams, i just decided to focus on Marans. Im fighting with thought of getting rid of my lemon cuckoo orpingtons and then i wouldn't have anything but marans, im struggling with it because the orpingtons are good gentle birds and lay real good. But i could use the pen there in.

They really are gorgeous birds. Not many roosters are prettier than a big healthy game cock in good feather. They are such proud and handsome birds. I raise standard American Games and standard Old English. I rehomed my OEGB when hubby let me get a couple more trios of standard OEGs as a compromise. Games are high spirited and pack a wollop if you dont know how to handle them. They can be very aggressive as they were bred for the pit. There aren't a whole lot of people who show standard Games so Im really looking forward to getting some of mine in the show cages in Nov and Dec.

Here are a a few of our American Games, 2 different lines/varieties I am working with to name only a couple. Lol

I couldnt imagine parting with one of my breeds, I love them all. If you love your orphingtons it would be a shame to get rid of them. My neighbor raises lavender orphingtons and they are beautiful birds.

They are called "spangled" but in terms of SOP they aren't a true spangle. I think the genes are similar to mille fleur and are definitely recessive as the cock bird throws solid wild type (BBR) colored offspring when mated to unrelated wild type colored hens. It's just one of the many projects I'm working on. :D
