International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

View attachment 1519278 Another chick and another girl! It's almost too good to be true that all 4 are pullets. There is exactly a 2 week spread now and 1 egg left. This cuckoo is pretty amazing if you ask me. I think Saturday is the latest it will hatch.

Edit: is there any way I'm not seeing headspots! It's a bit shocking to me...

the black chick on the left looks like cockerel.

a friend of mine gave me a pullet. she is black with bluish ear lobes. BUT she has a strait comb so far! if her comb remains strait she will be my breeder no 1! she is about 4 mo. all the other girls have s-shaped combs.

It's two weeks old already. Staggered hatched I posted about weeks ago. These had a CLB mom so they should have had headspots if male.

Here it is when it was 4 days. Never had a hint of a headspot

it is hard to judge from the photo, not to mention I don't wear glasses and I should, lol. I have a marans hen that looked like a boy at that age. she still has boy's stance but lays eggs.

I think sad news. The last egg pipped and appears is trying to come out of the shell but was in the middle of the coop just now. I thought mom or one of the babies may have pecked it. I went and go a baggie to remove it and see it's still wiggling. Maybe trying to work out of the shell still? I've never done this but I thought I saw blood. I put it back under mom I hopes I'm wrong and this is just what hatching looks like...

Edit: mom isn't interested. I made a contraption in the bathroom and turned it into a sauna. Go back to check =Baby is chirping and making it hard for me to do what I think I need to. It looks like it broke its upper beak when it went to hatch. Mama knew best and left the nest. Now I'm the jackass trying to intervene. Wish I wouldn't have checked on them. Sad.

There is a thread on assisting hatching. I know we are not supposed to help them. Sorry you are going through this.

I culled it. Its beak was so broken. That's why mama rejected it. Farm life sucks sometimes. Little boy was peeping and talking to me.

I didn't post the pic but it came out of the fat end of the shell. All the other chicks split their shell in half. Maybe this is why? i would have helped him if it wasn't for his beak. - these were autosexing marans crosses so I did see a head spot as he dried off.

Yes, It does suck sometimes. I know we shouldn't help but I feel for the poor babies. My first chicken was a crippled rooster. It hatched when we had snow. It froze and filled up with air. Looked like a balloon. Called the vet and he had us suck out the air with a syringe. He survived but he hopped on one foot. Followed me all day long everywhere I went. Not a breeder but one of the best pets I ever had.
