International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I quit counting. Born April 23 and combs and waddles have been plump and bright red for about a month. Every day I eagerly check...

None of my spring hatch BCM pullets are laying yet either. I have a blue copper that was born in the winter/very early spring and she has laid 2 eggs and then stopped. They take a while to get started. At the very earliest I've had a Marans to lay is 6 months.

Congrats, he's beautiful!

Why is it that the best ones are the ones you lose? I had to put down one of my roos the other day due to a leg issue that would make it impossible him to breed. He had the absolute best type, excellent tail angle and no white showing on his tail or wings :( He was a gorgeous boy. I have 2 more left but both have a little white in their tails and tail angles are a little high. One is better than the other though so he'll be the one I use. The other will only be staying around as an emergency backup.

Thank you!! :)

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear you lost your best cockerel. That is always the way it goes! My luck runs very much the same way. I lost my favorite SDW Game cockerel that was free ranging. I had big plans on using him as a breeder, so I feel your pain and frustration! All is not lost, at least you have 2 spares.

:hugs

Here are a couple pictures of my cockerel from Harvey I took this morning. He is in a 4x4 temporarily. I looked him over yesterday and his underfluff is nice and dark also. He is exactly what I needed. He is still feathering in so his tail will fill out more. :)

He looks good kayla, out nice and early playing with your new baby i see. Lol. How old is he? He should fit nicely with your ladies.

Here's a picture of the best boy I have left. Hercules (green boy) wasn't very cooperative but I tried. He's not terrible but has some white in his tail, shafting his chest and a little bit of a halo but he'll to do. Blue boy was beautiful. I'm thankful I still have this boy to use though. I didn't take any pictures of black boy. His tail is borderline squirrel tail and he has white on his wing and tail. He would only be used in an emergency.

His copper is a pretty shade and his halo is very minor. You can just cull through his offspring and select away from any with white in the future same as what Im doing. His tail angle looks good from these pictures, that's a big plus.

Harvey said he thinks he was born around the first of April so that sounds about right. I was thinking he looked around 6 maybe 7 months old. He's a very shy bird but he is handsome. I think he will get along good with my hens also. He seems like he wont be the rough and rowdy kinda fella. Lol

It could be from one of the Favorolles. It definitely isnt a Marans egg. Those Marans take their sweet time to start laying. Lol
You're right. I only have 1 polish and 1 favorolle in that coop. they each have a sibling in the new coop and are the only layers there. Got another egg just like this one from there.

So this means my hatchery polish aren't laying white eggs. Kind of a relief but I was hoping for a white layer just for the basket.
