International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

When I am on Marans Aspiran it is very difficult to follow the posts and chat. Google does not translate very well at all. The posts don't make sense to me. Is anyone else having this problem?

I suggest that you do a search for Mercks veterinary manual . They explain all of your questions there. The think you can do to help is vaccinate if they have the vaccine in your country. Once they get ILT they either get well or die, doesn't make any difference what you medicate with as it will not help. Very easy to vaccinate for it though. We do all of our Poultry first of September.

If it is ILT there is no treatment but antibiotics will help if there is a secondary bacterial infection.

@snowbird

I don't understand about the vaccinations. What happens if you have birds that have not been vaccinated around birds that have been vaccinated? Say for instance at a show or if I bought a vaccinated bird. I read that it is an all in or all out situation.

thank you. the birds have been vaccinated but got it anyway. I think that's why they didn't die. my area is prone to viruses, both people's and chicken's. the best thing to do is breed to resistance. I will see what happens with the chickens hatched here who are not vaccinated. they seem to be ok at the moment.

vaccinated chickens are carriers for life just like survivals. the new ones are at risk anyway. I will not buy any mutts with bad genetics ever again. they have been trouble in my flock.

vaccinated birds can infect non vaccinated ones. but wild birds and wind can bring the virus too.

@Chooks man as you live in a hot climate as well, do you think that white birds cope with heat better?

my new coops will be more exposed to sunshine, do you think I'd better raise white marans? I am not giving up bcm and cuckou silver, I might rearrange my chicken kingdom.

Best marans variety to support the heat better is the Silver cuckoo . the cuckoo pattern break the sun glare .

Darker colors are better for the heat not the lighter one.

White one are good for a snowy climate . they plumage absorb better the sun even in the cloudy days.

Just stopping in to subscribe :) I'll have to get pictures of my marans to share. I have 4 girls, most of them are too dark but Faith has some copper in her hackles. My roo is just a one year boy because he has side sprigs. He earned the name Voldemort because I told everyone he wasn't too be named lol.
