International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Someone out of Massachusetts found my Craigslist and is ordering eggs from Montana! I let him know that the weather is really restrictive right now (it's been well below zero all week with continued lows below zero into next week and beyond) but he's willing to wait! I'm surprised to be seen and tracked down from so far away. I just hope I can fulfill expectations once the weather settles.

Crazy!

why are you surprised? if I could import eggs from US I would order eggs from your beautiful birds!

How is everyone's birds? We have more than a foot of snow on the ground. Another foot of snow possible. Cold cold cold!!! The other night we had -4 degrees. I am worried about them and shut all doors to help keep them warm. I had one rooster picking on the smaller rooster. Now he is in a cage in the kitchen. Nothing like waking up to a crowing rooster everytime someone turns on the light. It needs to warm up soon so I can get the rooster out! Lol

Hi marchick! Brrr! -4 is cold! Sorry you are in the deep freeze. I always worry about my birds in the cold too. We will be 23F tonight. Boy, do I hate winter. Our temps have been all over the place the last couple weeks. We've had everything between 83F down to the teens! How can anyone or the chickens acclimate to that??? So far this winter no snow here but until April that could change. Sometimes we can have a foot but it doesn't usually lay around very long thankfully.
Here's to a prayer for an early spring!

Hi NanaK! I am Praying for a early spring also! I would love a few warm days but not 83. It would be major flooding. Lol

I'd just like it to stop dipping into the negatives every day for the last week. Our garage door is frozen shut and I worry about my hatchery heater going out!!
This cold keeps people from even wanting to think about chicks, so now so far I've hatched about 60 and no takers because of weather. Ah well, I wanted to raise the first few anyways, especially that little white one. I need to get handy so I can build sooo many more pens, I've so many breeder group's I want to set up... Sigh

missed you guys. Chooksman so thankful to see you back! I think you have no idea how much you have helped us all understand the breed in a holistic way. USA marans scene is kinda misinformed eh. I've been away from the thread for awhile myself, having lost my best friend in my profile pic, truly soul-crushing to the core, and also, busy with work. I hope to go back in the pages and keep notes. Wondering how many others have a "chicken doc" saved on a laptop or desktop with pictures from the thread. I try to keep one's username near the info so I can remember the source etc. It's all very slapdashed together. Oh well, still learning. <3 Getting the hatching center set up today, finally selling eggs and now mr. lee isn't so neggy about my "hobby" (it was never a hobby in my mind) LOL My old rooster needs a replacement but he's quite handsome and hard to beat so I'll be hatching hatching hatching hatching hatching (I would guess). Which brings me to another point, good lort! how do you have the patience for getting the perfect male. Last season grew up many, 2 to a year old, and both turned out to be subpar for me in coloring. I can post pics of them if anyone is curious about what I'm discarding and why. Still better than what you see on facebook :lau

Anyway I'm going into this spring with a good deal of patience and thankfulness and I wish you all the same. I hope our good genetics continue to spread and we dont suffer upsets from predator or disease. I took a LONG think on it (many long discussions with mr. lee) and I've decided to continue keeping the black birchen marans. I dont gaf what we are now supposedly calling them, black silver whatever, I'm going to keep calling them that. I also don't like the look of the new criteria for black birchens with the breast lacing.

PS: new puppy is mending my heart "well good" :love
