chooks man

-4 f is about -20 celsius! brrrrrrrrrrrrr
nice to see green grass and happy chickens.

missed you guys. Chooksman so thankful to see you back! I think you have no idea how much you have helped us all understand the breed in a holistic way. USA marans scene is kinda misinformed eh. I've been away from the thread for awhile myself, having lost my best friend in my profile pic, truly soul-crushing to the core, and also, busy with work. I hope to go back in the pages and keep notes. Wondering how many others have a "chicken doc" saved on a laptop or desktop with pictures from the thread. I try to keep one's username near the info so I can remember the source etc. It's all very slapdashed together. Oh well, still learning. <3 Getting the hatching center set up today, finally selling eggs and now mr. lee isn't so neggy about my "hobby" (it was never a hobby in my mind) LOL My old rooster needs a replacement but he's quite handsome and hard to beat so I'll be hatching hatching hatching hatching hatching (I would guess). Which brings me to another point, good lort! how do you have the patience for getting the perfect male. Last season grew up many, 2 to a year old, and both turned out to be subpar for me in coloring. I can post pics of them if anyone is curious about what I'm discarding and why. Still better than what you see on facebook :lau

Anyway I'm going into this spring with a good deal of patience and thankfulness and I wish you all the same. I hope our good genetics continue to spread and we dont suffer upsets from predator or disease. I took a LONG think on it (many long discussions with mr. lee) and I've decided to continue keeping the black birchen marans. I dont gaf what we are now supposedly calling them, black silver whatever, I'm going to keep calling them that. I also don't like the look of the new criteria for black birchens with the breast lacing.

PS: new puppy is mending my heart "well good" :love

welcome back!

sorry for your loss and congrats for the new puppy! when I lost my german shepherd it took 10 years to get another one. I have had terrier mixes but my heart was so broken that I could not have another dog that would remind me of my special girl.

btw, my german shepherd (1 yo girl) passed the test. I left my greek hooded trio in the garden and she broke the fence and got out. she did chase them but did not kill them. I was scared to death when I found her running around and no trace of chickens. the hens hid under the car and the roo was difficult to find as he flew to the geese and duck's run. as he is mostly white as well as the geese it took me a while to notice him. hens are missing a few feathers only.

Just got my first BCM egg!!! :wee:wee

Hey! So I have three 6 week old BCM chicks and I am wondering if I have a pullet out of the mini bunch.
Chick 1: Definitely a cockerel

Chick 2: I think this is a rooster but he is a little paler than chick 1 and has a smaller body.

Chick 3: I am hoping this one is a pullet and this one is smaller and has smaller comb and wattles and is actually paler than the others. It doesn’t have a lot of wattle development like chick 1.

Here are the 1 week pictures of them.
