International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Awesome! I'm so jealous! I want white marans someday. :)

don t be jealous those white chooks are not really white ,they are a nightmare for any breeders .they have too many hidden genes . many varieties are hidden by the Dominant white .
I m after only the dominant white genes in a pure form not linked to any other genes .

will be fun . all my breeding strategies are going to be tested .let see how I ll do ,ask me in few years time .

I want to breed a pure white marans ,better than the SOP .{ the French SOP allow some yellow on the hackle ,saddle and the shoulder of the Rooster ,doesn t make sense to me at all } not any hint of yellow is going to be permitted in my breeding program .pure white marans NOT yellow marans .

OK he has a black shoulder and a tail is little higher but he has what you need in your breeding programs .
Gorgeous comb +
nice quality copper +
Gorgeous orange eyes +
lovely small tail .gorgeous form and shape +
gorgeous head .every thing is correct ,comb .eyes ,wattles .Earlobes ,etc...... +
correct leg length ,colour and well feathered , +
well balanced body when looked at from the rear .+
And the big plus he is free from any parasitic white as far as I can see . +

how many plus do you need to qualify your cockerel as a breeders .don t miss out .just select few ladies for his , they should excel in what he is lucking .

in my book this type of cockerels are classified as breeders for type , tail shape .Head and legs .
the hens or pullets needed for this type of cockerel ,they should be well coloured with a a correct tail angle and deep chest .

you ve done well my friend .you can not fix every thing in one generation ,but truly you have corrected many fault out . BRAVO ,

Thank you for your assessment of him. I don't expect them to be perfect overnight and this line still needs work for sure. I will probably keep 2 cockerels from my line, this one and the runner up brother. I'm going to watch him a while before I even think about breeding him though. I have noticed that bad qualities like squirrel tails can show up quite often closer to the the 1 year mark in high tailed cockerels. So I will hang onto him and watch him until I am satisfied he doesn't inherit his maternal grandsire's squirrel tail. He is a nice bird though and I completely agree he will be breeder quality if he doesn't end up with a squirrel tail. :)

You'll get there! You definitely have all the knowledge and experience to clean the line up and get them coming how you want them.

I love white birds.. they are just so striking in a flock. My white legbars are looking great and I look forward to raising more and working with them.

I will be setting eggs in the next day or two. My Marans girls in with Duke are finally giving me a few eggs. Dutchess has yet to lay any though. Looking forward to seeing what this year brings. :)

my friend has a cockerel that was sired by a roo from my marans. he looks ok so far but his comb has 4 dents only. in case he has other qualities should I take him? my hens have huge looped/s-combs.

unfortunately my roo will end up in pot due to health issues.

small comb with 4 point better than large floppy ones, will help you down size your girls comb .
see what else good he got .

he is chunky, fast feathering, started to get copper early, hopefully no parasitic white - I have already booked him. I hope he comes from a hen without white earlobes. my friend did not get rid of them.

Tails genes are Autossomal .both parent has some thing to do with it .
even Djabel mated to the right hens ,manage to throw some lovely progeny with a correct tail .shape ,form and Angle

here his son ,K2

you need him to breed out the parasitic white and fix the black under fluff . your cockerel has a stunning pure black under fluff , look to me any way .can you check him please when you have time .
you lost a lot genetic diversity by loosing some of your chooks to the vermin so try to keep what you have .
