International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

There is a pretty little Max x Queen pullet free ranging that stayed underfoot all day and caught my attention because of her lovely copper hackle, but her legs are set too far back and aren't center when looking from the side view as they should be. She is also on the small and dainty side and I am looking for bigger girls to use as breeders.

I also found a pure line B pullet free ranging (aka FRF, Feels Right Farm), which is the same line Redbanks has. She is the last of her kind here at my place. Too bad she didn't turn out better.. she is just as ugly as her mother and her sister were. lol. Gamey looking in build, small with a high fanned tail. She probably lays a nice dark egg though, but sadly isn't the breeder quality I need. Redbanks definitely got the better stock from Feels Right Farm for sure. Luck just wasn't on my side with that line. C'est la vie.

I have gotten a later start on hatching this year, but I think that is for the better. The last few years when we have tried to raise chicks in the cold winter we have lost a lot so spring and summer chicks were my plan this year.
I understand completely. We have had so much snow in February over 2 1/2 ft . We still have patches of snow. All the roosters have frostbite. I had a heat lamp on and it still didn't help. My roosters are not beautiful anymore.

My two Cream Legbar cock birds got frostbite. Surprisingly the White Legbar cockerels both are fine. The Marans cockerels and Duke are fine as well. Winter always makes my Cream Legbar cock birds ugly. :(

That is crazy there is still snow on the ground there! Today was super windy here and chilly, but sunny and nice out. Spring is most certainly in the air. I have 2 Games broody already. They are determined to set whether I like it or not and are causing a lot of riff-raff in the next boxes. I either have to break them up or go buy a few chicks from TSC to let them surrogate.

The mottled hens have thrown lots of chest spotted chicks, so I'll need to move them anyways. I'm wondering just how spotted the progeny will be since the mothers hardly showed any signs of mottling before a certain age

If the chicks are showing more mottling than their mothers did at that age, I'd say they will be very mottled as they mature. :)

first for the mother to be mottled ,she need to have the 2 Mottled genes ,complete pair mo/mo. because the mottled gene is a recessive gene. need 2 genes to appear .

second .= if the mottled hen is mated to a no mottled male than all her progeny will be no mottled .
the mottled will throw mottled progeny if the cockerel she is matted to is mottled or split mottled .just one gene mo .

@Bantambird

looking at the head hatch down of the chick ,I think it is a parasitic white .
