yesterday I got another pair of 68 and 72 g. I put them in the silkie nest as 1 of silkies tried to sit. unfortunately this morning I found my favourite naked neck hen hanging on her foot behind that silkie. I grabbed her and silkie got scared and left the nest. NN is alive but in a very bad condition. another silkie decided to sit so I left the eggs in the nest.

I cannot download photos and don't have time to service my laptop. I don't have any new marans. black hens and bad combs as usual. my roo is in such a bad shape that I am thinking to cull him. he is molting now. 1 hen is sick (will butcher her) and 1 died about 10 days ago.

here a good example of how the chooks body type is better inherited from the mama hen.
here the Sire Stallone . his back is super tilted . too much plus his chest is lucking depth .

not sure how long she was hanging upside down. she looked like a dead hen when I found her. her leg got stuck. I hope she didn't break anything. she cannot stand up but she can move her legs and toes if I keep her. her eyes are closed. I gave her some water with sugar and hot pepper, than a shot of lincospectin and later aspirin. as her crop is full and she did not poop at all I gave her 1,5 ml olive oil. for about 7 hours she was freezing cold. she is somewhat warmer now and sleeping. of course she has been in my bedroom since this morning.

she has just pooped! her body has started to function again!

there is another cockerel with tilted tail. for the rest he looks ok. as my friend's roo died should he keep that cockerel? at least we know he is egg colour enhancer.

at what age do cockerels start to mate?

for sure if he is egg colour enhancer to be a keeper . marans are all about that lovely dark egg .

the hens if they are correct will fix the body type .

I hope she comes out of it. I have had that happen before. Once on the handle of a water bucket and once on a chair I left in the pen. They both came out of it but the one on the bucket was questionable for a while. Funny they can hurt themselves on what seems to be a completely clear pen. I have one Blue Copper Hen that has a hurt leg. She is up hobbling around but at least now she can stand. It has been at least a week so not sure if she will get better.

Hi everyone! Love, love, love seeing all the pics of the beautiful birds and eggs! I'm learning so much.

I wanted to give everyone a warning about spiders.

I was bitten by a brown recluse spider on my right hand about 3 weeks ago. I believe I was bitten in a barn we have, not near my birds thankfully. Anyway, it has been one of the most painful things I've ever been through. The poison really did some damage to my hand. They gave me IV antibiotics and an injection of steroids at the hospital, then steroids and 2 oral antibiotics to continue on at home. It got so bad (necrosis), I was starting to think I'd loose part of my hand. Thankfully the pain is gone and it's healing nicely and no surgery will be required. Dr. says at most there will be a scar. Still in a bandage.

We have lived here for 27 years and never seen one on our property. We are taking measures to fumigate the barn so hopefully it doesn't happen again. We have a couple poisonous snakes in our area and 2 poisonous spiders. I always look around and try to be aware but accidents happen.

Please know what is in your area and always look carefully, critters seem to blend in with surroundings so well. Sometimes we get busy and don't think about it (I know I did).

Back on topic.....
My BCM are now just over a year old and are laying well. They are really filling out and one girl, Mocha is starting to think she is "in charge". Some of my older girls are not so sure...lol. These girls have attitude...lol I need to get some new pics, too.

Have fun but be careful !!

Wow that's horrible! Glad to hear you are on the mend. I've never seen any Brown Recluses around my area but we do have them in this part of the country. That gives me the willies thinking about it! I've heard they can get down in shoes and stuff so people are bitten that way as well.

It's great you joined our group! It really is a good learning environment and filled with the best folks. I always feel amongst friends here. :)

Marans are a great breed as you have come to learn with yours! The females can tend to be bossy, but I have found they generally are pretty easy going. I have one hen, Duchess, who likes to pick fights and be the boss as well but once she gets used to unfamiliar birds she settles down. Lol
