International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I'm there with you, I'm hoping to sell enough chicks to pay for some breeding pens so I can further separate them, I've only 3 pens right now, one is holding extra cocks, one is grow out, and one is everything else, since the cream legbars are suspended right now. I'm hoping to break ground as soon as I get approval to do so. I like my pens big. I have the space, after all, so I want to utilize it.
I marked that nice looking cockerel, and the biggest reason he caught my eye? He had a few silver feathers on the wing bows. I've been fighting autosomal red for quite a while, so when I saw this, I wanted to mark any nice looking guy who had no autosomal red and acceptable markings.

big pen are good for the chooks ,but they need more material to build them .

if you keep selecting each time a pure silver cockerel to work with .you ll be out of the Autossomal red soon .
the cockerel you marked seem to have a stunning silver .

That all sounds very exciting! I wish we had more property to expand (or maybe I don't.. lol). The more space I had I would just fill it up with chikens so its probably good Im confined to what I have. Congrats on your birchens and cleaning up the red. That can be a huge headache I'm sure. They sure are lovely and I would be so happy to add some to my collection. But I need to stick to my black and blue coppers and focus on them. They are difficult enough. Lol

I'm pretty happy with how the whites are turning out. Out of six, 4 are pullets and 2 are cockerels. Perfect! A spare male is always good when replacements are not readily available, and I don't think I can ask for better ratios there. The oldest ones look so great confirmation wise. And color isn't an issue, because white! Lol. I suppose sun is going to be their only bane if I'm going to let the kids show them or later I get the chance to show.

lovely body type . shot and stocky .

white chooks silver based resist the sun better than a white chooks golden based .
mean ,white from a BCM will turn yellowish in the sun
White from Silver Black { Aka Birchen } will stay white .

Hi everyone! Love, love, love seeing all the pics of the beautiful birds and eggs! I'm learning so much.

I wanted to give everyone a warning about spiders.

I was bitten by a brown recluse spider on my right hand about 3 weeks ago. I believe I was bitten in a barn we have, not near my birds thankfully. Anyway, it has been one of the most painful things I've ever been through. The poison really did some damage to my hand. They gave me IV antibiotics and an injection of steroids at the hospital, then steroids and 2 oral antibiotics to continue on at home. It got so bad (necrosis), I was starting to think I'd loose part of my hand. Thankfully the pain is gone and it's healing nicely and no surgery will be required. Dr. says at most there will be a scar. Still in a bandage.

We have lived here for 27 years and never seen one on our property. We are taking measures to fumigate the barn so hopefully it doesn't happen again. We have a couple poisonous snakes in our area and 2 poisonous spiders. I always look around and try to be aware but accidents happen.

Please know what is in your area and always look carefully, critters seem to blend in with surroundings so well. Sometimes we get busy and don't think about it (I know I did).

Back on topic.....
My BCM are now just over a year old and are laying well. They are really filling out and one girl, Mocha is starting to think she is "in charge". Some of my older girls are not so sure...lol. These girls have attitude...lol I need to get some new pics, too.

Have fun but be careful !!

So sorry hope you are completely healed soon. We have lots of black widows here. We find about 6 or more every year.

I sent 2 eggs to a friend of mine. if they hatch I will take the chicks. the eggs were 68 and 70 gr.

yesterday 2 chicks hatched from the smaller eggs. my friend leaves in north greece so I cannot see the chicks. I will wait for the new boy to grow up and will get eggs from him and 2-3 big girls I think are worth breeding. the young guy's sire died recently and he was a full brother of my roo. he was egg colour enhancer for sure.
