International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Just because there is hostility on the Marans FB pages and clubs doesn't mean there is hostility here. I think we do well to not bring that here. We are all amongst friends in this group. :)

I do agree that if a line was imported from France and not mixed with American bred lines then it would still be of pure French origin. But you don't enter a Marans in a show as a French Black Copper Marans or what have you. It is entered as a Black Copper Marans. I think the only time people get their jimmies rustled is when people tack the French onto their Marans too loosely just as a marketing ploy. Like here is my pure French Marans... but yet they are willow legged and overmelanized as crap. Yes I have been duped that way in the past before I knew any better.

The reason American bred lines are not considered "French" even though Marans originated in France is because you have no idea what all Joe Blow has bred into his birds. That's the truth.

I don't have a dog in the fight. All of my birds are American because even though they do have some LP blood in the line they have been mixed with American bred lines. I see what you are saying and you are right. That is why the pure LP line of Brenda Little is still considered pure French because no American blood has been infused.

I have much love and literally do my best to stay out of the fray. Lol
Oh i know, please don't mos understand stand me. I have tons of respect for you and your birds. But you would think a marans is a marans no matter the country they are bred in they originally originated from France. If bred in America from different breeds just to look like marans they shouldn't be called marans. It all confuses me, i just like em is all i know!

Agreed. A Marans is a Marans to me whether it is bred in France or the US. I'm sure France produces their fair share of culls just the same as we do. A french bred and raised bird isn't anymore superior in my eyes than some of the stock bred and raised right here on US soil. No disprespect intended to Brenda Little or Monique, but I've seen some not so nice looking birds come out of that line so they are not all hatching pure perfection just because they are a pure French line.

We're good buddy. :)

I should have thought longer about my response before I submitted it when I said that just because a French family moves to the US and has kids doesnt make their kids French. We are not talking in terms of citizenship with chickens. Lol. Genetically yes they would still be French. I'm allowed to have a stupid moment. My brain is burned out with school and nursing stuff.

Excuse et moi.

Is anyone else sick and tired of broody hens?? I break 3 up, and 3 more clog up the nests with their broody bullcrap. It causes a lot of drama in the hen house. I love my Games and my Marans but they are major broodies. I don't want to hen raise a lot of chicks because the hens fight and kill the chicks in the crossfire. Especially the Games.. they are very aggressive. And if I'm going to have to pen the broody hen and chicks up I might as well brood all the chicks myself. :hmm

:frow Me! So far just one white hen is broody. I am sure it will get much worse soon. It can get on my last nerve. Every night I put her on the roost and every morning she is back on the nest sitting on nothing. Been doing that for nearly a month.

If you have a spare dog crate or small pen you can put her in there and break her up. I have a little Game hen like that. She has been sitting inside an old tire for a month on nothing. I threw all the eggs away but she managed to lay one more (or somebody did) and she is sitting on it now. I put her in the hen house a few nights in a row and she goes right back. They are on my last nerve! Lol
