Ive already got Prince (Queen's son) and Duchess penned together now. I tried to hatch some eggs from them in the summer but they stopped laying before I could get many to hatch. I had a few offspring from them if any survived. I just have to look through the younger birds.

I like Queen a lot too. She has always been my favorite. She is penned with Duke and will stay there. :)

good move .keep them for life and select only the best of the best .they will produce them for sure .
you have to narrow your breeding to the best producing pairs . Pullets producer for sure .cockerels I have to see ,they have all the trait as a pair to produce a good cockerel .you just need to give them a chance .breed a lot chicks from them in the future .

wood shaving . a little expenssive but does a great job . I ll use the bedding for my compost after I move the chooks out .

can't you get wood shaving for free from some local wood working company? a lot of us do that.

the other staff I use (for free) are pine needles. there are a lot of pine trees around.

I use all of that for compost.

I definitely will hatch chicks and grow them till at least 12 weeks. I want to get an idea of what they produce. I don't want BenTN and Kayla to get junk.
take my word

Every line is carrying hidden genes that are undesirable. Once you start inbreeding and line breeding the bad traits will surface (side sprigs, split wing, rudimentary outer toes.. all of which have cropped up out of Duke from HM and my hens). You just have to hard cull and move on. Dont sweat it. :)
