International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

That would be line breeding but we are still pen breeding correct? That is where I am foggy.

@marchick your breeding program is more advenced than mine and @kfelton0002 .
your chooks proven to have a correct Sex linked genes Z and W , it is a reason why your this year hatch are correct on they conformation and body colour ,tail and comb .so you line is almost done , need to be maitain now not to be bred .technial tern

@kfelton0002 here line has a proper W sex linked but missing a good Z chromozome . correct cockerel . so she is a second .

I m the last .I just a young improven stock . just figuring out who is who and what pakage they bringing in with them . so I m far away to start a line .I m just teat mating and studying my chooks make up .

OK .
first Blaze BC cockerel over Ruby /Jade and thy mama . your hatch will be BLue and Black. from this pen select only BC pullets and cockerels ..
move Pearl to Nimbus and the 2 BC pullets Rose and Lily second hatch . minimun Splash possible ,from this hatch select only Blue copper pullets and cockerels
ony breeding BL and Black .
next year .BC cockerel from Blaze will be mated to Blue copper pullets from Nimbus and Blue copper cockerel from Nimbus will be mated to BC pullets from Blaze .
do this method as many years I you can ,select only the best .you will have stunning line of marans BC/BLC

Breeding Blaze,Jade, Ruby and their mom first is good. Jade and Ruby are older. They are 30 weeks now. Hatched April 21st according to my records.

sound good they need 2 more month and can be penned with Blaze .this 2 month is a winter in your area ,keep the pullets well fed and condition them well by worming them and giving them some Kelp meal or fish oil for micro nutrient .
End of January they can be penned with Blaze for breeding that will give them enough time to get used to each other .march you will have you first hatch

I am doing the second worming now so they should be good.

@kfelton0002
so far I selected Queen ,Malika ,Perfect and this young pullet no name yet . grand mom ,adult hen and 2 young pullets better than both old hen . so there is improvement on the pullets departement .we need to do a same thing with cockerels .

you don t need 100 hens to bred a good line .you have enough I think 4 females and 3 cockerel plus Duke and his sister . plus you are going to get chicks from Marchicks .I think your breeding program for this year is complete .start building and conditioned the breeder for the spring .remove any cockerel/rooster from they pen .let them rest .
pen the 4 together and look after them well ,you already penned the cockerels in a safe place do a same thing with those 4 hens please .

how many chicks you are thinking of hatching this coming breeding season?

I will hatch as many as I can accomodate. At least 20 from each pair if hatching goes well.

So is Perfect going to be best suited with Prince (Queen's son pure from my line)? She has good color and he is dark. Seems like a good fit.

I will never guessed it is a same pullet . photos don t do justice to the bird .
I like her ,she has a good hackle marking .and great body type . her tail look good to me .
what her story please ?

she will add colour to her progeny for sure .body pattern breeder .

I need to check her wing band but they were group mated so theres really no telling which hen was her Dam. Duke is her sire. I did mark some of Queen's offspring as I can tell her eggs out of the lineup. But not all of them. I marked some of Malika's as well as her eggs I can tell apart as well. I can look at their wing bands when I have more time and see.

@kfelton0002
here a patern I see in your chooks ,
you foudation hen Queen ,has produced Malika , and Malika has produced Perfect .so that is your line right there in front of your eyes .
your line is a pullets line .it is based on W sex chromozome not the Z chromozome .it is a reason the pullets are correct but the cockerel are missing some thing is in W chromozome they can not get it from they moms .
what you need to do is the find a proper Z chromozome well coloured ones. to add to them so they will start throwing complete body pattern cockerel .

your line is lucking a well coloured Z chromozome .mean a well coloured cockerel to cross them too . what I m trying to fegure out .

I see a correct Z chromozome in Marchick Cockerel Nimbus .

The simpler the better, in my opinion. The less pens/birds I will be breeding will make it easier for sure. I'm not looking for quantity so much as quality and balancing out issues. Well matched single mated pairs will cut down on the volume of culls as well, as opposed to group mating 4-5 females to one male.
