As long as you have feed, your chickens will tell you whatever you want to hear. lol

I do talk to my chickens, I hope that doesn't make me strange. I like to tell them they are pretty. It builds self-esteem and improves flock morale I think.

I talk to all my animal .but I spend great deal of time with my chooks .I tell them a lot of stuff .
it is a reason I like to go and sit in the cockerels pens .they chat all the time .

Mine usually just stand around me and beg for feed as they pretend to listen to me. They will give my pants or shirt a peck here and there to encourage me to get the feed bucket. lol

Back crossing DA and DH to Queen and Malika will hopefully restore the darker egg color to the line.

good way of thinking .
you will be amazed what will come out of the line when is back crossed to it self for many time . the good become greater ,but the faults has to be bred out or cull . only the ones they exhibit the desirable traits that line was selected for will move forward to breed .

I had a ggod look at Dark Angel I don t think he is from Queens .he is totally different to Prince ,not a same mold .
tell me if I m wrong .you can see them live not like me through photos .
or if he is her son than it is a good new ,she is not potent breeder .mean she will throw different type cockerel recording to the roosters she will be mated to . that why Prince got the white from his Sire and DA did not get it because Duke s is free .
knowing the pedigree always make it easier .

my Day Walker is a talker . chat all the time when I m sitting there .he great me at the door too , never had a rooster like him ,the most gentle creature I ever seen . what a gift .
I ask him why did you let me down with Dalakhania ,he just said she is not his type . hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

the guy who work for me ask me why we have a lot of space but you have a hatcher in your bedroom . I tald him they sound when they are hatching help me sleep better ,because I do not sleep well when I m in Sydney .big town .
he think I m loosing my mind .

You're lucky you got the good egg color genes from HM's birds. I think the egg color of Duchess and the egg color Duke carries leaves something to be desired. I am hoping a male from your birds will improve upon that as well. My 2019 pullets are laying 4's and are lighter than their dams' eggs. Duchess barely lays a 4 which makes me question even using her.

#4 is a lower you can go .
if Duchess eggs are lighter and Duke s pullets lay lighter eggs than they dams ,then both of them are not bred from dark egg layer .
you hens lay dark eggs .
does Malika ?
Queen ?
Xina ?

For me other traits come first. My egg color is good so I am Blessed. Always room for improvement.

you have to keep the balance between body type and dark egg .maintaining both traits is ideal .no extreme breeding .
Marans are only chooks in my knowledge need a complex breeding program year after year .because ,they have 2 desirable trait .they body type/plumage and they dark /oval shape and shiny eggs .
