International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

The Cuckoo cockerel is merely an example. My black coppers are still young and I couldnt get a clear pic of my oldest BC cockerel's comb.

Took a brief break from studying to go visit my chickens and take a picture. Here is the oldest Marans cockerel I have. He is an 8 month old Cuckoo. What I like about his comb is that the blade doesnt touch the nape of his neck and he has an okay number of points. Im counting 7, is that correct? So he does have a couple points too many. Or would that be 6? Not sure if you would count the little nub of a point in the front. He doesnt have any side sprigs, or thumbprint.

What are your thoughts Redbanks?
I think he might be beautiful and we will have to trade BCM for CM eggs!

The French SOP does not count points. The American SOP states five. So if you are concerned with the latter, keep in mind if he does have 6 it only detracts a point or two. But this is exactly why I want to go over combs. I don't understand them at all.

The Coq below is pictured on the MCCUSA , the page on their site with the BCM SOP. Does he have 6 to you?

I might actually be seeing 7 points on that show cock.

Many judges around here are sticklers about the small stuff, combs, leg color and facial features being of the most importance.

Yes 6 points because the last point is not really a point but considered the blade, right? Combs are hard.. And I will most definitely include Cuckoo eggs in the box when we start swapping if you want some. What are chicken buddies for? ;) They dont lay the coveted "dark chocolate" eggs but my Cuckoos are the french feather legged type. I may use black marans in the future to improve their egg color.

What are you going to school for?

Sounds like some form of general practice medicine.

When I turn 18 I am going to work as a EMT, I plan to take a course in college for a Paramedic license.

After I complete my Paramedic classes I will be going for 18 more months to earn a Registered Nurse license. (hopefully)

Quote: My Cuckoos don't lay dark eggs but lay a lot of eggs. I have to tell you...... I have Olive Egger pullets, Cream Leg Bar Coq over Marans Hens and they all are like peas in a pod, they look like Cuckoos and have feathered legs. I also have real CMs with no leg feathers. Should we critique the coq from the MCCUSA site? There is another Coq on that page that I think is beautiful.

I am finishing up my Associates Degree in Nursing to become an RN now and then will transfer to another college after I graduate in December to work on my Bachelors degree in nursing. I currently work as an LPN (Licenced Practical Nurse) and the program Im in is an LPN to ADN (RN) bridge.

Good luck with your studies! Sounds like you have a good plan. :)

My Cuckoos @RedBanks
The cockerel has good leg feathering but the pullets leg feathering is sparse. Im hoping he will improve the leg feathering of the chicks.

We can critique whichever, you choose. I will be studying off and on and will try to pop in on breaks. :)

The Olive eggers sound lovely. I may have to build more pens for some Legbars and Olive Eggers. <3

We need Chooks man for combs. He can spot a problem from 3000 miles away! Recently he critiqued a bird that had small "m"s on the tips of the comb, I have also seen bent points. I will put together some photos. He will answer the points question on the Cuckoo but he will remind us...... "the French SOP"

@Braxton Brigade

You can never let "fault finders" determine how you will proceed with your breeding program. A true judge is not a fault finder. There are no perfect birds. You have to take into account the whole bird and weigh him against the SOP. You are not competing against other birds at the show. You are competing against the SOP. Snowbird wrote a post and said they just knocked off a point or two for an extra point on the comb. (Can't remember the quote verbatim)
