International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

this weekend my first group will be 16 weeks old .time to separate the pullets from cockerels and it is time to do the 2nd selection .
I will be selecting for =
1 comb type .they combs are big enough to tell if they good or bad .
2 body colour type . cockerels should have some colors on they shoulders by now .if not than they are out .don t want late bloomer .
the pullets should have they hackle marking ,if not they are out .
3 tail. both cockerels and pullets should have a complete tail by now if not ,they are out except if they where bred for different trait .like dark eggs or stunning body color .
eyes color I don t have problem all my chooks have bright orange eyes .
The sires of this group are Black Mamba ,Stallone . Arnold and Cry Wolf .so they cockerels progeny should be equal or better than them .
Cry wolf cockerels progeny all out .only keeping the pullets .
if I manage to get one faultless cockerel from each sire than I have done well .let see .

here the list of the chicks I selected from Liza s lines . only from BLC hens mated to 2 different rooster . one line bred and the other outcross .import line .
because I don t know the hens so I grouped the chicks to 3 different groups ,recording to the type of the eggs they hatched from .
A- chicks hatched from Dark Tubular eggs .
B- chicks from Dark Oval Dotted eggs .
C - chicks from Dark Oval eggs .

chicks sired by Splash rooster from the same line .line breeding = 28 chicks ,cockerels from this line are not keepers , late feathering type . I like my chicks to be feathered as early as possible so they can go outside free ranging . keeping all the pullets
A- 2 Splash, 2 BC and 4 BL.
B- 2 BC , 4 Splash and 3 BL.
C - 1 BC . 3 Sp and 7 BL.

Chicks sired by BLC rooster from import line = 25 chicks. I like this group better ,Early feathering type plus they are bigger Hybrid Vigor affect . well happy about it .future breeding cockerels will be all from this line . only need 3 stunning cockerels 1 BC ,1 BLC and 1 Splash. no much to ask for . if I get 6 faultless cockerels from this line I will eliminate all the BC/BLC and SP cockerels from all the other lines . let See .
A- 2 BC , 3 Sp and 6 BL.
B- 3 BC , 3 Sp and 3 BL
C- 1 Sp and 4 BL.

Dominant White progeny .same hens mated to 5 different roosters . different looking progeny .
1 - Stallone over his daughter . only the pullets are keepers and 1 cockerel .
2- Arnold over his half sisters . only keeping pullets .all the cockerels are cull ,legs problems .
3 - Khabib and Samir2 over they half sisters .produced stunning pullets/cockerels ,lot pure white . keeper cockerels will be from this line .
4 - Black Mamba over the same hens { not related lines } did not hatch many only 5 all great type . keeping 1 white and 1 dark cuckoo cockerels . only 1 pullet

I prefer Khabib/Samir2 progeny .big ,chunky .correct . plus they are pure white . Splash helped to clean the the white from the Black dots .

Dominant white done .

7 weeks old now and one of the boys has lost almost all his white fuzz, still a few little spots falling out. And he is starting to get his copper.
The eyes are oranger than the pic shows. they are skittish to the extreme and sometime this week I need to move them to the starter pen.

Hi! I have a question about combs. I have a blue copper Marans that has decent egg color(the bottom left in the carton) and nice lacing, but her comb flops a bit. I bought her as a day old from a breeder that shows from their stock.

I am by no means a “breeder” however the chicks that I hatch, I would like them to be ok, and not carry on bad genetics.

Is a comb with a flop not desirable, or could my cockerel help correct it? Thanks!

marans hen should have a straight comb or a little bent @ the back as long as the front is straight especially when she is laying .
bad comb is when is all floppy bent all the way from front to back .

the comb traits are autossomal .mean they can be inherited from both parent .so if your cockerel come from straight comb line ,yes he will help you fix that .

pullets yes I will have plenty but not cockerels . I have a high number but the faultless cockerels are only few to be seen .
the cockerels I m trying to select should have not faults . complete breeders.only need few .
tomorrow is a day of truth .let see .

DW X Unicorn cockerels are all faultless . before I hatched those little guys I thought I have a lot nice cockerels ,but not after I hatched DW X Un cockerels ,they made the rest of the cockerels look very bad . they set a high standard for me to follow .

lot photos next weeks for sure .only working with chooks this weekend ,so I ll have my camera with me .
I want you guys to see those cockerels I m talking about .
