International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Why is it bad for the marans rooster to have gold in hackles? Is this not acceptable?

BC rooster should have uniform rich red copper through out his hackle ,back ,lancet ,
any different shade of gold is a Disqualification . strongly inherited through future progeny .

your rooster has a second DQ .Squirrel tail .very high and arched .the SOP call small ,short and full tail @ 45 Degree angle high .

hope this help .

Here are the three pullets I have growing out, just looking for comments to start the base of my understanding. about 20 weeks old.

I feel like number 1 is my best. Is it okay that her hackles are so long and wrap her neck? This first solo photo of ber is 4 weeks old she has filled out a bit. I’ll get another photo of her now at 20 wks if you want.

2 has feather shafting, a medium a feathers on the legs, a sort of low tail most of the time, but very wide. Is this a short back?

3 has a low tail absolutely no copper and just a very few mossy feathers. Tons of leg feathers.

What should I be feeling for amongst these three to see if there are redeeming qualities? Im going to hatch more from this breeder and one more later this year and hope to setup breeding pens, are any of these worth it to keep for that? They came from eggs that were a number 7/8.

they are nice .different phenotype { genetic variation } from a same line .great stuff .
#1 is tall ,long Elegant ,great hackle marking . great back and tail .
#2 short and stocky .wide wide a deep chest and Abdomen ,shorter on her feet ,great . her back is a little shorter and her tail is a little open at base .and fluffy at top .
#3 she is between the 2 . long back and correct tail .need copper on her hackle .
each of these pullets is a breeder for different traits .

the breeder you got the egg from has a good flock for sure .a lot genetic variation in there .good to start your line from ,it is not over worked . lot room to improve without running into inbreeding depression .

I did a little brooder cleaning and separated hatch 2(KY boy Buster over my two girls). Out 17 I got 8 hens and 9 roos and a few of them not showing split wing. 2 hens and 4 roos look to be feathering out well. A little early to tell on the side sprigs but I am still tickled. Couple pics attached for funsies

Okay this makes sense. I’ve been wondering as they fill out #2 looks like a totally different type almost like a version of the letter “s”. Such a full breast. She looks very intriguing to me but I wasn’t sure if she fits the bill. Now I see she is a total square, thanks. That’s a nice visual.

The tail seems a little much to me, very wide and fluffy at the base along the back. I guess you balance that with a cockerel? As well as the feather shafting?

#1 I thought was a cockerel for a while until it was clear coloring wise that she wasn’t...I feel like she would make really good cockerels. You can just sort of see how she would transfer her shape on.

So these tails are not too low? Can They be brought up with the right cockerel?

Your pullets are gorgeous!

Does pullet 1 always hold her tail off to the side like how she is holding it in the view from above? It almost looks a little like wry tail but it may be just the way she is standing.

Same here! I have really liked a bird many times until I get down and look at them from all angles and find something like wry tail or a white feather.

I hope it was just the way she is standing in the photo and she doesn't have wry tail. :)
