International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Really nice birds pics does not ever mean really nice genes. These are the pullets I posted. Will keep them hope they lay dark eggs.

Our mentor assures us we can fix almost anything with selective breeding. You will be advised by show people to throw away every bird. I did that for a long time. What is it that you don't like about your pullets?

That chunky gal just blows my mind.

She looks like she could withstand a twister haha, I would love to see how well she would pass that on.

I bet you'd have some nice, robust chicks hatch out from her.

I know snowbird mentioned that he thought the girl with the copper looked like she had wry tail,,, but it only looked odd in the second photo to me.

Maybe you could put some feed on the ground and get a picture of her that shows her a bit more.

I honestly love more traits that your cockerel has than I dislike about his comb, perhaps some tinkering would be worth a try?

Really nice birds DOES mean really nice genes. You have copper.... you have long backs..... you have feathered legs. Need better pictures to comment more.

I think Little Peddler birds are just the most beautiful BCM I have ever seen. She started with three birds. I am sure they were not perfect. That fact and Chooks man have convinced me I need to learn to be a better breeder and not to be on a never ending quest for better birds. Some breeders think that withholding good birds from people just starting out is a way to keep them from having BCM.... producing bad birds. In truth.... there are already plenty of people just making chickens..... we need to educate, share birds and knowledge.

Chunky hen has yellow feet. The other girls have a wiry tails. I plan on keeping these three pullets they are just 20-24 weeks old. No eggs yet. It is all about the egg color right. I want to breed Black Copper Marans to SOP. I have a processing guy 3o minutes away that does 200-300 game hens every week, he does what ever I bring him $4 each. I live in Eastern Washington and near a lot of wheat fields. My feed is cheap.

Sounds like you have a good plan and you know what you don't want/want. I envy your processing guy. I need one. The dark eggs are wonderful although when I take my eggs to the market everyone wants the "blue" ones! LOL
