International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I Jiffy wing banded the 7 chicks last night before moving them to the brooding coop outside today. Around 2 weeks old.

OMG....that was stressful. Ive never done it before. I didnt hit the wing edge but they are still too close to it. Not in the middle where they should be. I was afraid of piercing the muscle! They will prob fall off eventually.....practice makes perfect. Right?

My best colored chick, #1, is a cockerel. He has a dignified personality. He is the boss of the coop. Just stands and watches what the others do. He will be a very good rooster. Friendly but not overly.

Received a phone call from a farm , Troy told me he found a nest of 6 eggs in the youngest group pen, he think 3 different pullets been laying in there , 3 out of this 6 eggs are very dark ,that what he said , best one so far , curious to see . 6 1/2 months old .great early maturing strain . 2 BLC pullets I think I know who they are ,they have big red comb .
I ll be going down to the farm on the weekend .can t wait to see .
BLC pullet with a big comb is one of them for sure .

I have been waiting for a while for a early maturing strain . well happy about them regardless of the color of they eggs . majority of the pullets I hatched this year are late maturing type except few ,daughters of Unicorn are early maturing too .

it is very important to breed a marans strain able to start laying at 6 months old . we almost lost this wonderful trait a modern marans strains .

Im excited to see the eggs

me too .
for me this is just a start of the season .lot pullets are POL ,so my work is not going to be any easier , catching all those girls and penning separately to check they eggs is not easy . but looking forward to it .
the youngest group I have 14 BLC , 8 Splash copper and 5 BC pullets
cockerels , 6 BLC { 3 good one} 4 Splash copper and 2 BC .
all my energy will be focused in this group .very wide gene pool .will last for years to come if bred properly . I will try my best .

Greenland Dominant white hen lay number 5/6 egg color ,finished molting and looking good . she and Khabib produced one pullet number #50 lay very nice dark eggs . #6 , so both of them have a good genes .
Greenland is Silver cuckoo with a extra 1 dominant white gene .so she will be bred to a Dark Blue silver cuckoo cockerel .big dude .

Keeping everyone straight as to a breeding program will be a big challenge to me. Keeping track of their prodigy from who, etc.

It sounds so confusing. But that is why i am banding everyone. Im sure once i actually get started it will not be as hard as it seems to keep everything organized.

Writing everything in a notebook right from egg color and hatch. Band every one. Pay attention to type, head to toes, etc. See....ive been doing everything you say from years back on this thread :)

But YOU have so many more to keep track of. I dont know how you do it.

taking notes and observing the chicks as they grow is a foundation of any breeding program start from fertile eggs .
they chooks are legs band with number ,@ 8 weeks /10 weeks of age . when hatched I use different color combination zip tie on the legs .
Have note books for every thing I do ,plus photos too .
I learn how to breed chooks since I opened my eyes .sine I remember I was marking the eggs for my mother and grand mother .both where fine chooks breeders of they time .so they thought me every thing about chooks and how to get it done .
I added a lot methods and different practice to they breeding base .
my first Black cockerel chick from my Grand mother @ age of 5 .we worked in hatching project together .I had to do the cleaning ,feeding , collecting /mark eggs .got paid well .one cockerel chicks I liked . good deal for my G/ma.
my second was a year after .white cockerel chick from my mother . same deal as G/ma .
3 year I was older and wiser I start getting proper share . 10% . do every thing . love it and I still .

guess I was prepared to breed chooks .
