International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I may throw in the towel with blue coppers then and soley focus on black coppers. I didn't raise any blue copper pullets this year. We have had raccoons kill a lot of my grow outs and have trapped and killed several of them. If I end up with at least one decent pair of black coppers I will be happy.

I will get better pictures of broken wing as he heals up and can be untaped. I will keep him penned up and safe. :)

I m doing a same thing no more BLC for me only solid Blue . with all these years hatching 100 and 100 of BLC marans I found out they produce too much cull . very hard to get a proper colored cockerel .and pullets never have a red rich copper like BC pullets .breeding BLC is genetically wrong too many dilutes genes and too many shade of Blues .
BC is a true and genetically correct plus a Splash copper .

you have very good BC hens .just are having a hard time this years .we all are and all the wold is too .next year hope will be good for us .
looking forward of see more photos of broken wing . good name .

I really like this little guy head ,look kind plus faultless comb and gorgeous eyes . that what you need .
separate him from the other so he can grow tail . I will pen him with the older hens if there is room there . so he will grow nicely and correctly .
we really need him for next year breeding .

She is fantastic! Dark Angel suits her well. My DA is the best natured male I have ever raised. He is like a feathered puppy. Dark Halo on the other hand should be called Satan's butt crack because he is very aggressive unfortunately. Will have to replace him as soon as there is a worthy candidate.

do you have more chicks from him ?
broken wing is your way out if you don t have other cockerels .

There are a few chicks in the brooder from Queen and Dark Angel I think. They are young. I will try to go through them today. I hope broken wing develops nicely and ends up being a good breeder. He has good quality copper so far and a good comb like his sire. His eye color is good too and I need that for sure.

who is this guy? , more photos of him please . look big and goofy . maybe just a way he is standing .
long and thick ,eyes don t look good in this photo .

I dont like him either. His back slopes upward toward his tail and his eyes are marbled. We will likely eat him. I will take more pics ASAP. He does have a long back though. I will watch all the cockerels over the next few months but I would like to sort out a few culls now. Likely all the darker eyed cockerels will go as soon as they have a decent amount of meat on them.

I had planned on penning him by himself until he matures a little.. As soon as he is old enough I can put him with hens hopefully. :)

I agree with you, blue coppers are too frustrating to get right. I will stick to the black coppers and put all my efforts into them and not have as many irons in the fire as they say. This year has been very tough with the pandemic, plus family drama on top of everything else. Hoping for better luck next year. :)
