International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Styptic powder will help to stop bleeding. Leave the scabs (natures bandaid) and put some polysporin or neosporin on his comb after he goes to roost. There is a lot of blood in the comb so it will bleed quit a bit after an injury.

Cocks will fight especially if they do not know each other. Also, fighting cocks were used to create BCMs many many years ago so its in their DNA. You may not be able to pen these cocks together.

I have a lot of wild turkeys that live around where I live in North Texas. They are fascinating to watch for sure. Glad you had a Happy Thanksgiving! We have to wait another 5 weeks before our Thanksgiving.

Funny you should mention that about Game being in the makeup of Marans. Dark Halo has become so intolerable that watering him in his pen became very difficult due to his aggression. I was going to work with big chunks bitten out of my hands and arms. So I snatched him out if the pen one day in a rage, intending to cull him then and there, but I put him out on a gamecock hitch instead because hubby wasn't home yet. He has had a major attitude adjustment since then. He thinks he is a Gamecock now. Lol

If it is your property and not in an area where there are zone restrictions then who cares about what the neighbors want. What you have and do on your property is your business. Just make sure the chickens are confined and cant wander over to the neighbors.

they called police and some other local service because of my chickens. just to find out that I am allowed to have up to 30 chickens:lau

cornstarch stops bleeding too.

And cayenne as well.
Although like most things it can also be overdone. Don't put it on thickly. With a bandage on top. Can cause a lot of pain if you do that. It's just a handy first aid thing to quickly put on the wound to stop or slow the bleeding. (I have not tried this on chickens only humans)

That’s got to sting like crap! I have rubbed raw garlic on cuts to speed up the healing process...it works but burns like crazy.

What is a topline? Is it the tail angle and the silhouette of the head, neck, back tail?

The topline starts at the base of the comb and ends at the tip of the tail. Each breed has their own specific topline (or shape, if you will) based on the Standard of Perfection (SOP) for that breed. In simple terms, we want our Marans to look like a Marans shape-wise. This is why we stress the importance of type first when breeding a new line of Marans. We can have a beautifully colored Marans Hen but if she looks like a Cochin then she is not correct per the Marans SOP. The Bottomline is equally important as well.

Do these pics help?
