Blue Shivas has 2 splash /1 dominant white chicks from Khabib and 2 BC from CTB boy and a girl .
the dominant white pullets is Khabib daughter and grand daughter in a same time line breeding but she carries her grand mother Kako dominant white gene .hope she grow as big as her . Khabib added a dark egg genes .

filled my lest 2 x 49 eggs incubator for season .worked well ,they all stopped laying or most .
separated the rooster from the hens .all the hens are back together in a big shed ,they are molting heavily . they are well protected from the elements .they can go out when they like .
well happy about this breeding season went smooth . better quality chicks .

I have a non marans question if anyone can help.

I have just hatched 5 chicks from a barred pekin hen and a white roo. he must be recessive white (I don't know his background). all 5 chicks are black. 1 solid black, 3 black with solid yellow spot on the head and 1 with a sort of triangle shaped non solid yellow spot. I guess a solid black is a girl. are all the others boys or there is a chance that those with solid yellow spots are girls?

nothing wrong with that .some line are better bred than others .
the SOP call for pullets to lay dark egg min 5 in they first 2 month of laying .that is enough to be classify as dark eggs layer .
but we breeders can select for longer period of dark egg laying by selective breeding .to that ,we need to breed from pullets in the end of they laying cycle before they molt .if they still lay dark egg min 5 than they progeny will lay dark eggs for longer period .

I m hatching from my pullets ,they are 15/16 month old ,they start molting or mid way .only breeding the one that are laying min 5 egg color . for sure most of the pullets I will hatch will lay dark eggs for a longer period .

breed from the one are still laying dark eggs regardless what fault they have .

Good to know.
So this will be my plan. Then.
I have 3 or 4 that I am keeping my eye on that are still laying a dark egg. They are the ones I will test breed with waylon after I move.

I have been catching up and penning the girls to document their egg color.

I did it when they first began to lay and now at 3 months in.

I am discovering that I should probably keep them penned for maybe 3 laid eggs instead of letting them lay one and then release back to the flock. Sometimes the egg color changes daily.

Soooo,
I am going to start again today penning them for an extended time to get a true egg color range per bird.

@Minky
I don t like this 2 brown headed chicks . they have different hatch down pattern plus brown beak and head .I suspect they have some sort of restrictor genes . not pure BCM .
they will be colored .gorgeous copper for sure especially if they dark brown gene carrier .middle toe should be free from any feathers ,
both will have vulture hocks when fully mature.

Let me guess here.
You are predicting vulture hocks because of the over feathered legs and feathers on the middle toes?

Is this correct?

Thank you for this info.

Would it be proper to ONLY keep the ones that lay #5 or better at the end of their cycle?
