International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

View attachment 3416116Finally moved the marans out from the silkies and into the pen with my layers. This morning, I got my first egg from one of them, not sure which. Not as dark as the eggs they hatched from, but I though the first eggs were the darkest. Could they get darker as she works everything out (and as they get bigger)?
You need to photograph all her 21 first eggs . The average of those first 21 eggs is the true genetic makeup of the pullets. The colour , the shape and the weight
At what age she laid her first egg ?

25 weeks. I had another egg later yesterday which was twice the size and around the same colour. Don’t know if it’s a second egg or the other hen.
Thanks, I’ll try to get a photo of every one.

Boy I missed you all!
I've not received any alerts for this thread.
Im all caught up reading what has been going on with you fine folks. It has been busy for everyone!

My pens are divided into 3.
Good comb rooster pen-pullet line
White tailed rooster pen-pullet line
Mean and nasty Junior pen-cockerel line

Ive been hatching for a couple of months now from juniors pen (cockerel line) in order to get enough cockerels to grow out. I know I am supposed to keep only cockerels from this pen but some of the chicks coming from here are too nice not to keep.

I have these 3 with nice hatch down and a brown head spot that I pulled out to save whether they are cockerels or not.

Am I doing the right thing by holding on to the ones with a brown head spot? my thinking is, keeping purity in my lines. If I am wrong, someone please tell me.

Nice to see you back , we missed you around. Love the hatch down and the body type of the 3 chicks you kept . When we say pullets or cockerels line breeding does not mean we can not keep nice pullets from cockerels line or verve versa . If we see correct specimen we will keep Doran t matter where did come from . We can use it for back crossing to the sire or dam to reinforce the trait .
Agree with you on correct hatch down and brown spot on the head sign I’d purity we want to keep breeding true.
Is nustyjunior giving you hard time ? If he is so busty we can t jkeep him for back crossing we don t want that trait to be passed down.
Love to see more photos of your roosters how they are looking as they are fully mature now.
Cheers
Chooks nan .
Working from my phone sorry for any incorrect spelling

One more thing I like about the older chick is early feathering type . Bravo my dear friend
Chooks man

Thank you. I was hoping you would say that. So far, it seems all the chicks are fast feathering coming from this pen.

Yes, Junior is the devil. He wants to kill me.
The reason he is around is because he's my only rooster that has no white in his tail feathers. Now at 1 year old, he does have a small amount of white underfluff.
Junior looks very different from the other 2 roosters. I plan to grow out his cockerels and get rid of him. He is my only hope to minimize the parasitic white.
He is tall and narrow V shaped.

All 3 roosters have comb damage.
We had a few days of very cold Temps around Xmas time.

This is Mr. Good comb which you cannot tell because of frostbite. Well, the one with the best comb. It's still not great.
He has white tail feathers but only a couple. Not as bad as his brother.
Pullet line breeder.

I love his size, leg color and type. He is a nice guy too. His back appears to be short and his tail popped up. His copper is better than these pictures show. I will try to get better pictures.

Any suggestions?
keep him for pullet line?
